Gen’s Ice Glimmer: Tennessee Walking Horse Rescue Story

What begins as a heartbreaking tale of animal cruelty transforms into one of hope and redemption. Meet Ice Glimmer, a noble and talented Tennessee Walking Horse whose remarkable journey from abuse to recovery will touch your heart.

    A Decade of Hidden Suffering

For nine long years, Glimmer endured unimaginable torture in the show horse industry. His front feet were chemically burned and scarred, then brutally beaten with chains while he wore nearly 8-pound shoes on each hoof. Confined to a cramped stall for years, Glimmer’s life was a study in suffering—all in the name of creating the “perfect” show horse.

The turning point came on April 5, 2013, during the MTSU Walking For Education Horse Show at Middle Tennessee University in Murfreesboro. Ironically, MTSU is renowned for its prestigious Horse Science Program, making this incident even more troubling. By that time, Glimmer’s show career had consumed nearly a decade of his life, and his future looked bleak.

A Rescue Mission That Changed Everything

Like many discarded show horses, Glimmer faced an uncertain fate—possibly ending up at a slaughterhouse. But fate had other plans. Tawnee Preisner, a dedicated member of a horse rescue organization, spotted Glimmer at an auction and knew she had to act.

“When these horses are scared to the point that they cannot use them anymore, they will do whatever means possible to get rid of them,” Preisner explained, highlighting the tragic reality of the show horse industry.

Thanks to Clant Seay, who generously funded Glimmer’s rescue, this Tennessee Walking Horse was given a second chance at life.

    The Permanent Cost of Cruelty

While Glimmer’s rescue is beautiful, the permanent damage inflicted during his abuse cannot be ignored. As Clant Seay soberly noted: “This is all damage. This is permanent damage. This isn’t an exception, this is the rule, this is what they do.”

The practice of soring—deliberately injuring a horse’s feet to create an exaggerated, artificial gait—is driven by human vanity alone. It serves no useful purpose, aids no natural function, and destroys the sacred bond of trust between horse and handler.

    A Call for Change

Glimmer’s story is not unique—it’s tragically common in certain corners of the horse show world. Animal cruelty doesn’t achieve greatness; it only creates cruelty and leaves permanent scars—both physical and emotional.

As equestrians and horse lovers, we must advocate for ethical treatment and speak out against practices like soring. Every horse deserves to be treated with compassion, respect, and kindness. Ice Glimmer’s rescue reminds us that redemption is possible when we choose to do the right thing.
