Just days after highlighting the plight of these rare equines in the UK, we have wonderful news: Police Scotland has welcomed a beautiful Suffolk mare into their mounted police force, and she’s already making waves.
Meet Rose: Police Scotland’s Newest Recruit
Nine-year-old Rose officially joined the Police Scotland mounted unit on June 19th after successfully completing her training. This stunning 16.3-hand mare is turning heads at the force’s headquarters at Blairfield Farm in Kilmarnock, and for good reason!
Sergeant Lesley Winchester couldn’t hide her enthusiasm when describing Rose’s arrival: “We thought she was huge. She’s very wide – she might not be the tallest at 16.3hh, but she’s very big built and will certainly make a good impression and have a presence on patrol.”
A Horse Built for the Job
Beyond her impressive physical presence, Rose possesses all the qualities needed for life in a professional mounted unit. Sergeant Winchester highlighted what makes this mare special: “She has the right temperament; she’s friendly and has good stable manners. She wasn’t fazed by the nuisance training with things like flags and plastic sheeting on the ground.”
These traits are essential for a police horse who’ll encounter unpredictable situations during patrols while remaining calm and composed.
From Show Ring to Police Service
Rose’s journey to becoming a police horse is a testament to the versatility of Suffolk horses. Bred and owned by Bill Ireland, she spent her early years excelling in the show ring under the guidance of producer Richard Telford. However, Rose’s connections recognized that she was ready for “a more varied life,” and she was put forward to Police Scotland as a potential recruit.
Her transition couldn’t have come at a better time. Sergeant Winchester explained: “We have some retirements coming up, so we’ve been looking for horses to increase our establishment.”
A Win for Breed Conservation
Rose’s success story offers a glimmer of hope for the critically endangered Suffolk horse breed. By finding meaningful careers for these exceptional animals, we’re not only preserving the breed but also showcasing their incredible value and adaptability to modern roles.
