Talk about a dynamic duo! In one of the most heartwarming stories from the equestrian calendar, identical twin horses Eric and Ernie both claimed victory in the BE100 section at Rackham Horse Trials on June 16th. Even more impressively, their scores were separated by just a fifth of a penalty—proving these brothers are truly two peas in a pod.

A Victory Built on Dressage Excellence
Sacha Hourigan piloted both champions to success, riding Caroline Richardson’s Twice As Nice IV (Ernie) and Double Act IV (Eric) to impressive finishes. Ernie secured his place on a dressage score of 28.8, while Eric matched the competitive spirit with a 29—a testament to Hourigan’s exceptional horsemanship with both partners.

A Miraculous Birth Story
The story of Eric and Ernie begins long before their competition success. The twins are sired by Zenturio and out of Mrs. Richardson’s mare Hyanie d’Aubrie (Annie). What makes their arrival truly special is the remarkable journey to get them here.
Initially, Annie wasn’t even scanned as in foal. But when a second scan revealed a pregnancy, there was a twist—one embryo was hiding behind a cyst, making it nearly impossible to detect. Fortunately, Mrs. Richardson was present when Annie gave birth and made a critical decision that would save a life. Ernie, the second colt, was born “bent double” and in distress. Mrs. Richardson’s quick thinking and intervention pulled him safely into the world, changing the course of both horses’ destinies.

From Birth to the Winners’ Circle
Despite their dramatic entrance into the world, both foals thrived beautifully. Today, the twins are virtually indistinguishable—with just two subtle differences to tell them apart. Ernie stands at 16 hands high, while Eric is slightly taller at 16.2 hands. The only other giveaway? Eric sports a distinctive snip on his nose.

Two Individuals, Both Champions
Fans and fellow competitors frequently ask Sacha Hourigan which twin is the “better” horse. Her response is refreshingly insightful and shows exactly why these horses are thriving under her care.
“People ask me which is better, but as a rider, I have to treat them as individuals,” Hourigan explained. “Eric is tough and a bit arrogant, and Ernie is tough but might have a bit of a worry. There’s no love lost between them though. I said to Eric at Rackham, ‘Your brother has just won’, so he had to do it too!”
This approach deserves serious applause. Rather than comparing the two brothers or declaring a winner, Hourigan recognizes their distinct personalities and rides them accordingly. It’s a masterclass in horsemanship—understanding that even identical twins have their own temperaments, quirks, and strengths.
The Bottom Line
Eric and Ernie’s story is a beautiful reminder of why we love this sport. From a miraculous rescue at birth to dual victories on the same day, these remarkable twins prove that with dedication, expert care, and a rider who truly understands them, anything is possible. Whether it’s Eric’s bold confidence or Ernie’s careful consideration, both horses are phenomenal—and that’s exactly what makes them such a joy to watch.
