A heartwarming royal visit has captured the hearts of animal lovers everywhere! The Duchess of Cornwall celebrated her 72nd birthday at the iconic Donkey Sanctuary in Devon, where she participated in a special ceremony to honor the charity’s remarkable 50th anniversary milestone.
During her visit, the Duchess christened an adorable newborn donkey foal named Sweet Pea. The precious filly, born just three weeks earlier, arrived at the sanctuary after her mother was rescued by the charity. The foal’s mother had been taken in when her previous owner could no longer provide adequate care—a heartwarming example of the sanctuary’s vital rescue work.

But the celebration didn’t stop there! Three-year-old Jacob Leney, whose mother Naomi works at the sanctuary, presented the Duchess with an absolutely adorable rendition of “Happy Birthday.” The precious moment captured the warmth and community spirit that makes the Donkey Sanctuary so special.
“The Duchess of Cornwall’s visit today was an opportunity to celebrate our landmark achievements over the last 50 years,” explained Mike Baker, the sanctuary’s chief executive. “From our foundation as a charity rescuing UK donkeys from neglect and abuse to becoming a global leader for equine welfare, research, and veterinary care—we’ve come so far.”

Baker continued, “But we must acknowledge the massive challenges that remain. The suffering of animals around the world remains unconscionable.” The visit provided an important platform to introduce Her Royal Highness to members of the International Coalition for Working Equids (ICWE), an organization dedicated to partnering with the World Organisation for Animal Health.
The ICWE brings together leading animal welfare nonprofits, including the Donkey Sanctuary, Brooke, SPANA, and World Horse Welfare, to advance equine welfare on a global scale.

As a token of the special occasion, the Duchess received two meaningful gifts: a beautiful framed photograph of the newly-named Sweet Pea and a collector’s edition Donkey Sanctuary Monopoly game. These mementos will serve as lasting reminders of a truly unforgettable birthday celebration.
This delightful royal visit reminds us why donkey sanctuaries and equine welfare organizations do such crucial work. Every rescue, every recovery, and every success story represents hope for animals in need. Sweet Pea’s arrival and her naming by the Duchess symbolizes the bright future ahead for vulnerable equines everywhere.
