Lea had reached a breaking point. “I thought things would be better off without me,” she recalls. On that darkest of days, she made one final decision: to ensure her horses had water before saying goodbye. But then something extraordinary happened.
“I had decided that that was the day and went to make sure everyone had water just so I could leave with peace on my mind,” Lea explains. “But it was her—Cider—preventing me. It was very clear to me that she said ‘You can’t go’ and ‘I need you’. It almost felt like hocus pocus, but it was enough.”
In that crucial moment, Cider’s presence became unmistakable. A horse who had been discarded by the world was now the one doing the rescuing.
From Broken to Bonded
Cider’s journey to Lea’s sanctuary was a difficult one. “This was a horse who was literally thrown away,” Lea says with emotion. When Cider first arrived, the trauma was evident. She wouldn’t accept treats, and trust didn’t come easily.
Yet something magical sparked between them almost immediately. “Her bond with me was actually pretty immediate,” Lea remembers. “She has learned that people are kind.” Through patience, love, and consistent care, Cider began to heal—and in doing so, she helped Lea heal too.
Returning the Favor
When Cider developed colic—a serious equine digestive condition—expensive surgery was necessary. Without hesitation, Lea made her decision. When asked if the costly procedure was worth it for Cider, her answer was simple and powerful:
“Cider saved my life once. It was my time to do the same thing for her.”
This remarkable bond between horse and human reminds us why we do what we do. Our horses aren’t just animals we care for—they’re partners in our lives, sometimes our saving grace.
