In a heartwarming win for horse conservation, breeder Adrian Hoskins from Buckinghamshire has welcomed three beautiful Suffolk foals this season—a significant milestone for one of the rarest and most beloved draft horse breeds. A Former Thoroughbred Breeder Turns to Suffolk Conservation
Adrian’s journey with Suffolks began in 2015 when he purchased his first Suffolk mare. Since transitioning from thoroughbred breeding, he’s become deeply committed to the breed’s survival. Today, he manages five Suffolk mares and two yearlings on his property, each playing a vital role in his breeding program.
“People say breeding Suffolks is hard—they can be difficult to get in foal because they’re such big horses,” Adrian explains. “But mine have been quite good, and all took the first time.” His success demonstrates that with dedication and proper care, these magnificent draft horses can thrive.
Strategic Breeding for Genetic Diversity
What makes Adrian’s approach truly special is his commitment to genetic diversity. Rather than taking the easier route of using a single stallion across his mares, he strategically selected three genetically unrelated mares and matched each with a different stallion.
“I chose mares as far genetically removed as I could get,” he notes. “Each of my mares is a different line and they went to a different stallion. It would have been easier to use the same stallion, but I split them up so I would have the diversity.” This thoughtful approach helps prevent the genetic bottleneck that threatens many rare breeds.
