Soldier Breaks Neck Saving Runaway Gun Carriage & Horses

In an extraordinary act of courage, Lance Bombardier Grace Gostelow from the King’s Troop has been awarded a commendation for bravery after a terrifying incident that left her with a broken neck. Two years ago in Charlton Park, London, the skilled mounted gunner made a split-second decision that would change her life—choosing to protect those around her rather than save herself.

A Routine Training Exercise Turns Dangerous

What started as a normal practice session for the King’s Troop’s famous musical drive quickly spiraled into chaos. LBdr Gostelow was riding alongside two other soldiers, each controlling a pair of horses pulling a 1904 gun carriage weighing over a tonne. They were working in an isolated section of the park when disaster struck.

One horse suddenly bucked, creating a domino effect that unsettled the entire team. The sudden movement unseated both of her fellow riders, leaving only Gostelow in control of the massive carriage and four panicked horses.

    Choosing Bravery Over Safety

In that critical moment, Gostelow faced an impossible choice. She could have thrown herself clear of the runaway team and the heavy gun carriage, prioritizing her own safety. Instead, the 30-year-old elite horsewoman disregarded her own safety and put herself in harm’s way, fighting desperately to regain control of the bolting horses.

Her experience in the saddle became her greatest asset. As someone who hunts competitively, competes in military races, ride-judges Retraining of Racehorses classes, and works with Irish draught horses, Gostelow had the skills needed for this life-threatening situation. She maneuvered the team toward the edge of the training grounds, trying to slow their dangerous gallop.

    Courage Has a Cost

The runaway horses finally came to a halt when the leaders bolted on either side of a tree, bringing the carriage to an abrupt stop. While the four horses escaped the incident uninjured, Gostelow paid a devastating price for her heroism: she broke her neck in the collision.

The recovery journey has been long and challenging. LBdr Gostelow has undergone extensive rehabilitation to heal from her serious spinal injury—a testament to her determination and strength both in and out of the saddle.

    Recognition of True Heroism

The King’s Troop and military officials have rightfully recognized Gostelow’s extraordinary bravery with a formal commendation. Her actions that day—putting the lives of her team, the horses, and the public ahead of her own safety—exemplify the very best of military service and the equestrian spirit.

For every equestrian who’s felt that bond with their horse, Gostelow’s story reminds us that the connection we share with these magnificent animals sometimes calls us to be more brave than we ever thought possible. Her recovery continues to inspire all who know her story.
