Sometimes the most powerful stories come from the most unexpected journeys. Sally’s Story is a testament to the transformative power of patience, love, and unwavering dedication – proving that even the most traumatized horses can bloom into confident, trusting companions.
A Second Chance at Life
Sally, a 15-year-old registered Quarter Horse mare, arrived at Amazing Grace Equine Sanctuary (AGES) in December 2016 in dire circumstances. Pregnant and facing the unthinkable reality of slaughter, this beautiful horse was given a lifeline by the dedicated rescue team. But her physical rescue was only the beginning.
From day one, it was clear that Sally carried deep emotional wounds. Extremely fearful of humans, she showed little evidence of ever having positive interactions with people. She was defensive, withdrawn, and seemingly unreachable – unable to be caught, led, touched, or even handled. For anyone looking at Sally, the road ahead seemed impossibly long.

A Mother’s Love & New Hope
In April 2017, Sally gave birth to a beautiful filly – a silver lining in her story. The foal was remarkably friendly and curious, finding her way into a loving forever home after weaning. Yet Sally herself remained stuck in her fear, making little progress despite the sanctuary’s tireless efforts to help her heal.
It wasn’t until July 2018 that Sally’s life truly began to change. That’s when volunteer trainer Hannah Johnshoy stepped in, bringing professional expertise and an abundance of patience. With Hannah’s skillful guidance and the unwavering support of everyone at AGES, something magical began to happen.

A Happy Ending – And a Greater Purpose
After nearly two years of dedicated rehabilitation at AGES, Sally was finally ready for the next chapter. In September 2018, she was adopted by a wonderful family who saw past her fears to the gentle soul beneath. Today, Sally enjoys the home and stability she always deserved – proof that healing truly is possible.

Why Sally’s Story Matters
Sally’s journey is more than just one horse’s feel-good story – it’s a powerful reminder of the impact rescue work has on the entire equine community. When families adopt rescue horses like Sally, they don’t just save one life. They create space for sanctuaries like AGES to rescue more horses in desperate need of help.
Sally proved that even horses who have endured significant trauma and neglect possess an incredible capacity to heal. With proper care, professional training, and most importantly – unconditional love – these horses can go on to successful, fulfilling lives, just like any other horse.
Consider Opening Your Heart to a Rescue Horse
If Sally’s story has touched your heart, consider the countless other horses waiting for their own second chances. Whether through adoption, volunteering, or donation, your support can help sanctuaries like Amazing Grace Equine Sanctuary continue their life-saving work.
