For generations, horses have been humanity’s faithful companions across vast distances. But this spring, innovative horse trainer Emma Massingale is flipping the script in the most creative way possible—she’ll be cycling across Europe while transporting two adorable miniature equines in a specially-designed tricycle!

A Journey Like No Other
Emma, a talented free-rider and filmmaker, will embark on this extraordinary adventure starting in Switzerland. Her route will follow the scenic Rhine River across Europe, ultimately bringing her back to the UK. This isn’t just a whimsical cycling trip—it’s a thoughtfully planned expedition that challenges traditional notions of equine involvement in long-distance travel.
The journey features two untrained companions: Stanley, a two-year-old miniature Shetland pony, and Percy, a charming miniature Appaloosa horse, also just two years old. Both are completely untrained, making this adventure even more remarkable.

A Track Record of Bold Equestrian Adventures
Emma’s European expedition is just the latest chapter in her impressive portfolio of horse-centered adventures. Last year, she horse-boarded across all 10 islands of the Outer Hebrides with two young Eriskay ponies, tackling challenging terrain and unpredictable weather. In 2015, she spent an entire month on a remote Irish island, working with six completely unhandled Connemaras—a testament to her training expertise and passion for working with wild equines.

Ethical Horsemanship at the Heart
“I am always looking for different equine adventures, and I quite liked the irony as horses always used to pull us,” Emma explains with characteristic enthusiasm. “Whatever I choose has to be ethical and long-distance trips do make me question how much the horse enjoys it.”
This philosophy is at the core of her cycling approach. Rather than asking the ponies to carry her across Europe, Emma will do the physical heavy lifting while Stanley and Percy enjoy the journey without physical exhaustion.
“I want to enhance my relationship with them without having to physically exhaust them or ask anything of them—this way it means that I get fit and they don’t have to worry about it!” she says passionately.

Sharing Knowledge and Inspiring Equestrians
Beyond the adventure itself, Emma plans to make this journey educational and community-focused. The expedition will include stops at schools and tack shops where she hopes to inspire young equestrians and showcase her training techniques.
“They are untrained ponies, so I will be sharing my techniques and training style as we go,” Emma explains. “The plan is to set lots of nice little goals and have some people join us along the way.”
This interactive approach transforms the journey from a solo adventure into a collaborative experience that could inspire a new generation of equestrian enthusiasts to think creatively about their relationships with horses.
A Fresh Perspective on Equine Partnership
Emma Massingale’s upcoming European cycling adventure represents more than just an impressive feat of endurance and creativity—it’s a powerful statement about ethical horsemanship. By prioritizing the well-being of Stanley and Percy while pursuing her own fitness goals, she demonstrates that meaningful human-equine partnerships don’t require the animal to bear physical burdens.
As horse lovers anticipate updates from this groundbreaking journey, one thing is certain: Emma’s European adventure will challenge how we think about bonding with our equine companions. Follow along as these miniature ponies experience the adventure of a lifetime—in comfort and style!
