Orphaned Filly Ava Finds Comfort in Giant Teddy Bear

In one of those heartwarming rescue stories that reminds us why we love horses, an orphaned Dartmoor hill pony foal named Ava has captured hearts everywhere. Discovered alone and frightened near Lee Moor village in early July, this brave little filly is now receiving specialized care and comfort as she recovers from the tragic loss of her dam.

A Desperate Discovery Turns Into Hope

When local residents found Ava on Dartmoor, just a few weeks old and grief-stricken after her mother’s passing, they knew she needed immediate help. Charity Hill Pony Resources sprang into action, bringing the vulnerable foal to safety and providing overnight monitoring before transferring her to the Mare and Foal Sanctuary’s specialist center, Beech Trees, located in Newton Abbot, on July 3rd.

    Overcoming Physical and Emotional Challenges

Losing her mother at such a tender age presented serious challenges for young Ava—both physically and emotionally. The sanctuary’s dedicated team got right to work, keeping her comfortable while she recovered from breathing problems and a mild bout of colic. Chest X-rays helped veterinarians monitor her progress closely.

“Losing her mother at such a young age would have caused her to deteriorate both physically and mentally,” explained Sally Burton, head of equine care at the Mare and Foal Sanctuary. “At just a few weeks old, foals are entirely reliant on their mothers’ milk, so we’re feeding her every two hours around the clock. We’re all so glad she was found and rescued. Now she just needs time and a lot of love.”

An Unexpected Best Friend: The Giant Teddy Bear

One of the most touching details of Ava’s recovery? A giant teddy bear provided by her caretakers to offer comfort and companionship during her quarantine. While not a substitute for her mother, the plush companion has become an important source of solace for the grieving foal. It’s a beautiful reminder that sometimes the smallest gestures mean the most.

Still On The Road To Recovery

Though cautiously optimistic, the sanctuary team emphasizes that Ava is still not completely out of danger. “She’s not out of the woods yet,” a spokesperson for the Mare and Foal Sanctuary shared. The filly remains in quarantine as she continues her healing journey, with dedicated caregivers monitoring her progress around the clock.
