“The stress of the injury possibly triggered the recurrence of a chronic eye problem,” explains Donkey Sanctuary veterinarian Vicky Grove. What followed was a battle that tested Jonty’s resilience: he developed immune-mediated inflammation affecting both eyes, leading to painful corneal ulcers and constant eye discharge. The result was devastating—Jonty lost his sight entirely.
Innovation Meets Compassion: The Guardian Mask Solution
Recognizing that protecting Jonty from harmful UV rays would be crucial to his recovery, the veterinary team at the sanctuary turned to a specialized piece of equipment: the Guardian mask. Often compared to sunglasses for equines, this innovative “bug-eyed” mask has proven to be a game-changer in Jonty’s care plan.
“The mask is just like wearing sunglasses, and Jonty has made some good progress,” says Ms. Grove. “Though the back of his eye is still damaged, we are monitoring his eyes with an ophthalmoscope, and we have tested his eyesight with an obstacle course, which he has completed.”

Once Jonty has enjoyed adequate rest and continues to show improvement, he’ll be relocated to Slade House Farm, the Donkey Sanctuary’s primary visitor site. There, he’ll join a small, carefully selected group that includes Will, another partially sighted donkey. This thoughtful placement ensures Jonty will be surrounded by animals with similar experiences, creating an understanding and supportive community.
