In a heartwarming twist of fate, an orphaned Irish draught colt has been given a second chance at life thanks to an unlikely hero – a five-year-old nanny goat with a big heart. A Devastating Loss
Imelda and Jim Kingston of County Cork, Ireland, were thrilled when their beloved Irish draught mare, Carrigbawn Sunset, gave birth to a healthy colt. Their joy was short-lived, however. Just days after successfully delivering her foal, the mare took a sudden turn for the worse.
“After foaling, the mare got very sick and we had to get the vet,” Jim explained. “The vet thinks she may have gotten poisoning from the placenta a few weeks before foaling.” The colt had been nursing for only two and a half days when Jim discovered the tragic news – the mare had passed away in her stable.
Finding a Solution Against the Odds
With their newborn foal now motherless, Jim and Imelda faced an urgent crisis. A young foal’s survival depends on adequate nutrition in those critical early weeks, and time was running out. Jim quickly purchased milk replacer and began bottle-feeding the orphaned colt around the clock – but he knew this temporary solution wouldn’t be sustainable long-term.
“I had a couple of people ring me offering their mares, but they’d have gone dry before they could get them to us,” Jim said. “I didn’t know what to do at the time.” Just when the situation seemed hopeless, help came from an unexpected source – their thoughtful neighbor.
When a Goat Becomes a Lifesaver
The Kingstons’ neighbor mentioned that her sister, Niamh Creagh, had a five-year-old nanny goat with a proven track record of successfully nursing foals. It was worth a try, and desperation often leads to creativity in the equestrian world. The goat was brought to the Kingston farm that very day.
The results were nothing short of miraculous. “We put her on a ledge in the stable and the foal started suckling straight away – and hasn’t stopped since,” Jim recalled with evident relief and gratitude. “I’d heard of goats feeding foals but never seen it done – you’ll try anything when you’re desperate, and when the offer came we thought we’d see how things go.”
Ensuring Proper Nutrition
While the nanny goat provided the emotional comfort and bonding that a foal desperately needs, Jim recognized that goat’s milk alone wouldn’t provide all the nutrients a growing draught horse requires. “I’m giving the colt vitamins and minerals to balance out the goat’s milk,” he explained, demonstrating his commitment to the foal’s complete health and development.
This thoughtful supplementation ensures the orphaned colt receives the perfect combination of natural nursing and targeted nutritional support – giving him every advantage as he grows stronger each day.

Jim is under no illusions about what could have happened without the nanny goat’s intervention. “If it wasn’t for the goat he could have died of hunger,” he said simply. “I’m very grateful to Niamh.”
