Three Miracle Foals Born from Deceased Mare’s Legacy

Love transcends all boundaries—even death itself. This is the remarkable true story of Kyrie, a beloved Arabian mare whose legacy continues to inspire horse lovers everywhere through an extraordinary journey of advanced veterinary medicine and unwavering devotion.

    A Bond Like No Other

Lisa and Jimmy Gaudio’s farm in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, holds decades of cherished memories. It was here that Lisa raised Kyrie from a foal, nurturing the beautiful Arabian into a national champion. The pair shared an unbreakable bond—the kind that only develops between a dedicated equestrian and their horse. But life had other plans.

Personal circumstances forced Lisa and Kyrie to part ways for 15 long years. During that time, Lisa never stopped thinking about her beloved companion. Determined to reunite with Kyrie, Lisa made it her mission to track down her cherished Arabian and bring her home. In 2013, that dream finally became reality.

    A Heartbreaking Decision

Unfortunately, when Kyrie returned to the farm, it became clear that her health had deteriorated significantly. Her medical conditions worsened despite the best care and treatment available. Faced with her mare’s suffering, Lisa made an incredibly difficult but compassionate decision—to have Kyrie humanely euthanized.

Yet in that moment of profound loss, hope emerged in an unexpected form. Thanks to groundbreaking advances in equine reproduction, Lisa’s story wouldn’t end with goodbye—it would transform into something truly miraculous.

Modern Science Makes the Impossible Possible

In the moments immediately following Kyrie’s passing, Lisa and her veterinary team sprang into action. Her ovaries were carefully transferred to the New Bolten Center for Equine Regenerative Medicine, where Dr. Tamara Dobbie performed a delicate retrieval procedure.

“We recovered 16 eggs from Kyrie’s ovaries,” Dr. Dobbie explained to FOX29. “Those were then packaged and shipped overnight to Texas A&M, where they performed in-vitro maturation—the actual ICSI procedure where they inject a single sperm cell into each egg.”

Using frozen sperm from a carefully selected stallion, four healthy embryos were created through this advanced reproductive technique. These precious embryos were then transferred to three surrogate mare recipients. Against the odds, all three mares conceived successfully.

The Arrival of the Miracle Foals

In early 2017, three beautiful foals entered the world—each carrying Kyrie’s genetic legacy forward. The first to arrive was Epona, born to surrogate mare Mercy on January 16. Just days later, Big Man in Town made his debut with surrogate mom Peace on January 22. Finally, on February 1, Elle Vitorina was born to surrogate mare Graceon.

Three perfectly healthy foals. Three incredible miracles. All carrying the spirit of their biological mother, Kyrie.

A Rare Achievement in Equine Science

Dr. Dobbie emphasized just how extraordinary this outcome was: “It is unusual to get so many pregnancies from a deceased mare’s ovaries.” In fact, the successful birth of not just one, but three healthy foals from post-mortem ovary collection represents a remarkable achievement in equine veterinary medicine.

This case showcases the incredible possibilities available to horse owners today—options that didn’t exist just a generation ago. What could have been a story that ended in heartbreak became instead a testament to the power of modern veterinary science and the enduring bond between humans and horses.

    Kyrie’s Legacy Lives On

Lisa’s story reminds us all why we cherish our horses so deeply. Through Epona, Big Man in Town, and Elle Vitorina, Kyrie’s bloodline, genetics, and spirit continue to thrive. For Lisa and the entire equestrian community, these three foals represent far more than a scientific breakthrough—they’re a living tribute to one Arabian mare’s extraordinary impact on the people who loved her.

In the world of horse breeding and veterinary medicine, Kyrie’s three miracle foals will forever stand as symbols of what’s possible when love, dedication, and advanced science come together.
