The equestrian world is mourning the passing of Tootsie, a beloved mule who holds the remarkable distinction of being the world’s oldest. On March 1st, this cherished animal was peacefully laid to rest at the age of 56, surrounded by the caring staff and veterinary team who had devoted themselves to his wellbeing throughout his extraordinary life.

A Legacy of Love and Care
Tootsie’s journey began in 1992 when he arrived at The Donkey Sanctuary’s Knockordbane farm in Liscarrol after his original owner could no longer provide for him. Later relocated to Hannigans Farm, Tootsie spent the majority of his life in this safe haven, where he became a cherished member of the sanctuary community and a favorite among visitors during open days.

A Personality Larger Than Life
Those who knew Tootsie described him as a mule with loads of personality. He absolutely loved his outdoor time in the paddocks, enjoying “a good run around” whenever weather permitted. Staff and volunteers who spent time with him knew him as an independent character with strong opinions—particularly when it came to his place at the feeding trough!
“Tootsie lived a healthy and happy life,” a sanctuary spokesman shared. “He was known to visitors who met him at open days at Hannigans Farm and to students and volunteers who have spent time at the sanctuary. He had a strong, independent personality, he loved his food and could be territorial about his place at the trough.”

The “Super Grannies” Program
In his later years, Tootsie was part of The Donkey Sanctuary’s “super grannies” group—a special program dedicated to caring for elderly donkeys and mules. These senior residents receive exceptional care and attention that goes above and beyond standard sanctuary protocols.
During the colder months, Tootsie and his companions were kept warm and comfortable with quality rugs, infrared heat lamps, and cozy bedding. Their specialized diet was carefully formulated to be easily digestible and nutritionally balanced for aging animals. This comprehensive approach to geriatric equine care ensured that Tootsie’s golden years were filled with comfort and dignity.

A Peaceful Farewell
After becoming ill over the past few weeks, Tootsie did not respond to treatment. Given his advanced age and the low likelihood of recovery, the sanctuary made the compassionate decision to end his suffering peacefully. In keeping with the loving care he’d received throughout his life at the sanctuary, Tootsie was surrounded by veterinary professionals and farm staff who had cared for him during his final moments.
“As throughout his life at our sanctuary, in his last moments, Tootsie was surrounded by vet and farm staff who had loved and cared for him,” the spokesman reflected. “We are delighted and proud to have looked after Tootsie at our sanctuary. He was a mule with loads of personality, much loved by our staff and supporters.”
Remembering an Icon
Tootsie’s 56 years represent not just a record-breaking lifespan for a mule, but a testament to the transformative power of proper care, love, and sanctuary. His story reminds us that rescue organizations like The Donkey Sanctuary play a vital role in providing second chances and quality-of-life care for equines in need.
The bonds formed between caretakers and the animals in their care run deep, and Tootsie’s legacy will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him. Rest in peace, Tootsie—you were truly one of a kind! 🐴
