A Living Legend Turns 30: Black Beauty’s Billy Celebrates in Style
There’s something magical about horses that have graced the silver screen. They become more than just animals—they become part of our cherished memories. Billy, one of five black horses who starred in the iconic 1994 film adaptation of Anna Sewell’s Black Beauty, just celebrated a milestone birthday that horse lovers everywhere are cheering about. This magnificent Orlov trotter from Moscow turned 30, and his owner Louise Maryon organized an unforgettable celebration that brought together 200 devoted fans over two special days.

From Moscow to Hollywood: Billy’s Incredible Journey
Billy’s story is as fascinating as the films he starred in. Imported from Moscow in late 1992, this talented Orlov trotter was purchased by Warner Brothers in 1993 through Victor Armstrong, the film’s second unit director and horse master. But here’s the heartwarming twist—Louise Maryon, who worked as a groom on the film set, fell in love with Billy and bought him once production wrapped. What started as a professional relationship blossomed into a lifelong bond that would span three decades.

A Show Ring Champion and Beloved Companion
After his successful film and television career, Billy enjoyed a distinguished show ring career as a foreign show horse competitor. “He won every time he went out,” Louise recalls with a smile, “but he could be quite hot to ride and dumped just about every groom we put on him!” This spirited stallion certainly had personality to spare.
When Louise and her family relocated to Wales 20 years ago, Billy transitioned into a new role—her personal riding horse and gentle nanny for her younger horses. At age 20, when Billy developed some arthritis in his back, Louise made the caring decision to retire him from active work, allowing him to enjoy his golden years in comfort.

Two Days of Celebration for a Horse of a Lifetime
On August 10-11, Louise’s Welsh yard transformed into a festival of equine appreciation. Two hundred visitors descended on the property to celebrate Billy’s milestone 30th birthday with balloons, handmade cards, and genuine affection for this remarkable horse.
“People go crazy over him, and we thought because it was his 30th, it would be nice to hold a celebration over two days,” Louise explained. “He’s a massive people horse—whenever someone goes to the stable door, he’ll stop eating and come over to see them!”
The celebration had a heartwarming energy. Visitors snapped selfies with Billy, the Pembrokeshire branch of the Pony Club brought handmade birthday cards, and guests shared their excitement about revisiting the original film. The event was free to attend, with donations benefiting two important equine charities: Brooke and Redwings.

The Horse of a Lifetime
Through three decades together, Louise’s admiration for Billy has only deepened. “Billy is my horse of a lifetime. He is such an intelligent horse. I’ve owned and bred many horses, but I’ve never met a horse with the personality he has,” she shares with obvious affection.
Billy’s story reminds us why we fall in love with horses. It’s not just about their athleticism or their appearance—it’s about their personalities, their intelligence, and their ability to forge deep connections with the humans who care for them. As the last living star of the original Black Beauty film, Billy has earned his place in equestrian history, but more importantly, he’s earned the eternal devotion of everyone who’s ever had the privilege of meeting him.
Here’s to Billy—a true horse of a lifetime, and proof that the bond between horse and human can last a beautiful, meaningful lifetime.
