From Dangerous to Devoted: One Rider’s Journey Rehabilitating an Abused Horse

Horses are capable of incredible tenderness and affection, but they can also display surprising aggression and unpredictability—especially when they’ve experienced trauma. Past experiences shape equine behavior in profound ways, and sometimes it takes a truly dedicated rider to help a troubled horse overcome its fears and behavioral issues.

Therese Moser’s story is one of remarkable perseverance and unwavering commitment to her horse. When she brought home Mac, a very green 5-year-old gelding who had been broken and ridden for only six months, she knew she was facing an uphill battle. Mac carried the emotional scars of previous abuse and showed almost every behavioral red flag imaginable: he was terrified of people, defensive about being touched, and dangerously nervous under saddle.

    The Challenges Ahead

Mac’s issues went far beyond typical “green horse” behavior. He was extremely herd-bound and would rear dangerously whenever separated from other horses. He’d also rear out of excitement during jumping or when he simply didn’t want to work. Everything seemed to trigger him—he was spooky, nervous, and terrified of just about everything, from his rider to jumping to unfamiliar situations.

Therese left no stone unturned in her efforts to help Mac succeed. “He was checked by a vet, chiropractor, and farrier,” she explains. “We tried bitless, bareback, no jumping—but he still acted like this. These clips only show about 1/10th of what we went through with months of dangerous and reckless behavior from his side.”

    Never Giving Up

What sets Therese apart is her absolute refusal to give up. “I knew he was a great pony, and I refused to give up on him,” she says with conviction. That determination proved to be the turning point in Mac’s transformation.

A Year of Hard Work Pays Off

After a year of consistent, patient, and dedicated work, Mac underwent a complete transformation. The scared, aggressive horse who reared at everything became calm, confident, and reliable under saddle. “After a year of hard work, he was the perfect pony,” Therese reflects with pride.

Mac’s story is a powerful reminder of the resilience of horses and the impact that patience, professional guidance, and unconditional commitment can have. Therese Moser proved that even the most troubled horse can become a wonderful partner with the right approach and unwavering dedication.

If you’re working with a rescue horse or a horse with behavioral issues, Mac’s transformation offers hope and inspiration. Success stories like this showcase why so many equestrians fall in love with these incredible animals—and why they’re willing to invest time and effort to help them heal.
