Every second Sunday in November, the United Kingdom pauses to remember the brave souls who gave their lives in service to their country. But there’s one group of heroes we don’t always think about: the horses who fought alongside our soldiers.
This Remembrance Sunday, an inspiring mounted service took place on November 10th at the stunning Wynyard Hall in Stockton-On-Tees, North East England. This luxurious estate has become the perfect backdrop for a gathering that grows more special each year—a heartfelt tribute to the equine warriors who served throughout history’s conflicts.

A Growing Tradition of Remembrance
What started as a one-time tribute has blossomed into an eagerly anticipated annual event. Organized by Steve Birbeck, Master of Yorkshire’s prestigious Highmoor Bloodhounds, the mounted service has captured the hearts of horse lovers and history enthusiasts alike.
“It’s quite a spectacle to watch, so we are hoping to get some more members of the public to come along,” Birbeck shared, highlighting just how moving this occasion truly is.

Unity in Honor
The mounted service brings together an incredible cross-section of the community. Professional riders, ex-military personnel, hunting enthusiasts, and everyday horse lovers all converge for one unified purpose: to honor the horses who gave everything for their country.
Last year’s event saw over 200 riders positioned outside the hall, creating an unforgettable sight. While this year’s mounted contingent was at capacity, the organizers warmly welcomed foot followers to participate in the service and share in the tribute.

Supporting a Noble Cause
This year’s service aimed to raise funds for Here4horses, a local rescue charity dedicated to helping horses in need. It’s a fitting partnership—using this solemn occasion to support the very animals we’re celebrating.

Why This Matters
Millions of horses served in the First and Second World Wars, and many more in countless military conflicts throughout history. They carried soldiers into battle, transported supplies, and showed remarkable courage and loyalty. Yet their sacrifice is often overlooked in our collective memory.
Events like this mounted service ensure that these noble creatures are never forgotten. Whether you’re a dedicated equestrian, a history buff, or simply someone who appreciates the special bond between horses and humans, this annual gathering at Wynyard Hall is a powerful reminder of the incredible contribution these animals made to our nation’s history.
If you missed this year’s service, mark your calendar for next November—because remembering our four-legged heroes is something we should all be part of.
