Black Beauty’s Billy: The Last Living Star Still Thriving at 30

If you’re a horse lover, chances are you’ve watched the enchanting Black Beauty movie at least once. This timeless film, released in 1994, brought Anna Sewell’s beloved 1877 novel to life on the big screen. With over 50 million copies of the book sold worldwide, the movie continues to capture hearts across generations—and for good reason. It’s a touching story told from the perspective of a noble black stallion, chronicling his journey from birth through triumph and heartbreak, ultimately finding the happiness he deserves.

What many fans don’t realize is that five different horses portrayed Black Beauty throughout the film, each playing their role during specific life stages of the character. If you’ve wondered about the fate of these equine actors over the past 25+ years, we have some truly wonderful news: one of them is still alive and doing beautifully!

    Meet Billy: The Living Legend

His name is Billy, and he just celebrated his 30th birthday! This remarkable horse holds a special place in Hollywood history and in the heart of his devoted owner, Louise Maryon. Louise first fell in love with Billy when she was a teenager, and after he completed filming on Black Beauty, she made it her mission to give him a forever home.

“Billy is my horse of a lifetime,” Louise shares with obvious affection. “He’s been my riding horse, done a bit of showing in foreign breed classes, and some film work. He is such an intelligent horse. I’ve owned and bred many horses, but I’ve never met a horse with the personality he has.”

From Hollywood to Home: Billy’s Journey

Warner Brothers acquired Billy (originally named Blindaj) along with two other horses—Vandal and a chestnut named Gidrap—from a society. Three additional black horses and a trainer were brought in from the United States to complete the equine cast. During filming, the talented Billy was ridden by Sean Bean and galloped by Alun Armstrong, who played the unforgettable drunk character Reuben Smith.

Initially, Warner Brothers planned to sell Billy to a film horse supplier after production wrapped. However, Louise Maryon was determined to bring him home. Her persistence paid off, and the studio agreed to sell Billy to her directly—a decision that changed both their lives forever.

A Star on Screen and in the Show Ring

Billy boasts the second-highest screen time among all five horses in the final cut of the film. His most iconic scene? The dramatic barn fire sequence! Trainers taught Billy to strike a wall upon hearing a specific sound cue and to gallop through a field of geese—creating one of the most memorable and thrilling moments in the entire movie.

After his acting days concluded, Billy’s career flourished in the show world. Louise brought him to Wales, where he became a champion in foreign breed classes, winning most of the shows he entered. His talents extended beyond the ring, too—Billy even appeared in commercials for major brands.

    A Well-Deserved Retirement

Now at the impressive age of 30, Billy has officially retired from active competition and film work. He’s earned every peaceful moment grazing in the Welsh countryside, surrounded by the love and care of the woman who fought to give him a home when Hollywood was ready to move on.

Billy’s story reminds us why Black Beauty continues to resonate with horse lovers everywhere. It’s not just about the beauty and nobility of horses—it’s about the deep, unbreakable bonds that form between humans and these magnificent creatures. Whether on screen or in real life, Billy embodies the spirit of the character he helped bring to life: a survivor, a champion, and a true friend.

For anyone who’s ever dreamed of giving an animal a second chance at happiness, Billy’s journey is the ultimate inspiration. He may no longer be galloping through barns or winning ribbons, but he’s living his best life as a beloved companion—something infinitely more precious than any accolade.
