40-Year-Old Horse’s Birthday Adventure: A Tale of Spunk

Some horses are content to grow old gracefully in their stalls. Not Whiskey. At 40 years young, this remarkable gelding demonstrated that age hasn’t dimmed his spunky personality or his determination to get what he wants—especially when dinner is late.

Roberta Moore’s decades-long friendship with Whiskey is the kind of bond every horse lover dreams about. For more than 30 years, they’ve been inseparable companions, navigating life’s ups and downs together. From trail rides to training sessions, they’ve built a relationship that transcends the typical owner-horse dynamic. Now, even as Whiskey’s aging body has slowed him down and cost him his teeth, their connection remains as strong as ever.

When Patience Runs Out: Whiskey Takes Action

Like many senior horses, Whiskey’s routine has had to change. His soft feed diet accommodates his dental challenges, and Roberta adjusts his care accordingly—because that’s what love looks like after three decades together. She also cares for a second horse, Lillibet, keeping both animals happy and healthy.

One evening, as Roberta settled in to watch a movie, she planned to feed both horses when it was finished. What happened next, told in Roberta’s own words, is a lesson in equine determination:

“I have two horses which take up a great deal of my time. The oldest, Whiskey, has been my best buddy for more than 30 years. Due to his age, he has no teeth for chewing, so I gave him a soft feed and went on to watch a movie, deciding to feed both of them after. At about 11 p.m., just as my movie was finishing, the dogs started barking and going crazy. When I got there, he was standing in his stall waiting for his overdue dinner. I secured him and started to panic about where my other horse, Lillibet, was. I called and called and couldn’t find her. Finally, I looked in her stall, and there she was—knee-deep in new bedding, blanket on, and plenty of fresh hay. She had no intention of leaving that stall for anybody!”

An Ingenious Escape: The Birthday Surprise

Here’s where Whiskey’s story gets even better. The resourceful 40-year-old had gotten fed up waiting for his dinner. So he did something most horses would never think to do—he unlocked and opened his gate, then made his way to the house to demand his meal. Talk about taking matters into his own hooves!

This wasn’t just any escape plan; it was a masterclass in equine problem-solving. Whiskey had clearly decided that dinner time was non-negotiable, and he was going to remind his beloved owner exactly what time it should be.

    The Lesson Learned

After finding Lillibet safely nestled in her stall and feeding both horses, Roberta had to laugh at the situation. She even installed a second lock on the gate to prevent future escape attempts. But more importantly, she learned a valuable lesson that night: Whiskey’s dinner is now on time, every single night.

This heartwarming story reminds us why horses capture our hearts the way they do. Despite his advanced age, Whiskey hasn’t lost his personality, his intelligence, or his ability to communicate exactly what he needs. And Roberta, after 30+ years together, knows better than to mess with dinner time.

    A Birthday Celebration Worth Remembering

At 40 years old, Whiskey stands among an exclusive group of equine centenarians—horses who have defied the odds and lived to be considered elderly in horse years. His story is far more than just a funny anecdote about a clever horse outsmarting his owner. It’s a testament to the power of the human-horse bond, the personality that lives within these magnificent animals, and the joy they bring to our lives, no matter their age.

So here’s to Whiskey: a horse who proved that 40 is the new 20, that love transcends time, and that sometimes the best birthday present is simply getting your dinner on time. Happy birthday, Whiskey—you’re a legend.
