From Police Horse to Show Champion: Murphy’s Amazing Comeback

Police horses don’t always get the credit they deserve for their incredible service and dedication to keeping our communities safe. Across the globe, mounted police units rely on these amazing equine partners to do essential work—but their contributions often go unnoticed in everyday conversations. That’s why Murphy’s story is so heartwarming.

Murphy, a retired horse from Portland, Oregon’s Police Bureau Mounted Patrol Unit, recently made headlines after the unit was formally decommissioned earlier this month. Rather than fade into obscurity, this Gypsy Cross has found a new lease on life with his original owners, Randy and Jean Snow—and he’s already making waves in the show ring!

From Police Work to Show Glory

The Snows raised Murphy from birth, but eventually needed to find him a new home when their horse collection grew too large. They entrusted him to Portland’s Mounted Patrol Unit, where he thrived and became something of a local celebrity. Known for his impressive stature and athletic build, Murphy earned fans throughout his years of service.

But Murphy’s most impressive performance came not in patrol, but on the show circuit. In his very first show after retirement, this remarkable horse absolutely dominated the competition, sweeping multiple awards for his movement and stunning appearance. “He just cleaned house and got everything there was to win,” Randy Snow proudly shared. “Everyone loved him.”

Based on his incredible debut performance and naturally wonderful temperament, the Snows have exciting plans for Murphy’s future. They’re planning to enter him in dressage competitions where his graceful movement and athletic ability can really shine. Beyond the competition ring, the family also wants to involve Murphy in community outreach programs—giving back to Portland and helping people connect with these noble animals.
