Sometimes the most powerful stories come from the darkest moments. Today, we’re sharing the truly inspiring and emotional journey of Star, a beautiful foal whose resilience reminds us why rescue work matters so deeply in the equestrian community.
A Foal in Crisis
In August 2013, rescuer Nick White discovered Star—just two months old at the time—grazing with his mother, Ivy. What he found was heartbreaking. This innocent young foal had been severely neglected and was suffering from an unthinkable injury that would have devastated any animal lover’s heart.
A leather headcollar had become deeply embedded into Star’s delicate skin—lodged painfully into his nose, jaw, and the sensitive flesh behind his ears. As Star grew, the unmerciful halter tightened relentlessly, cutting deeper into his flesh and pressing against bone. The swelling was severe, and the poor foal had endured weeks of agonizing suffering with no relief in sight.

Emergency Surgery Gives Hope
Star needed immediate help. He underwent critical surgical removal of the embedded headcollar—a procedure that was as necessary as it was urgent. Following his life-changing surgery, Star was welcomed with open arms to the Glenda Spooner Rescue and Rehoming Centre, where manager Claire Phillips and her dedicated team would oversee his complete rehabilitation.

Claire Phillips, speaking about Star’s progress, said: “I’m thrilled to share that thanks to the generous donations funding his rehabilitation and care from World Horse Welfare, Star is now a bright, healthy horse settling into a loving new home.” The entire rescue team deserves our deepest admiration and gratitude for their dedication and compassion.
