Jacob is a 12-year-old stallion who’s been proudly serving the St. Petersburg, Florida police force since 2009, working alongside his dedicated partner, Officer Jason Hughes. While Jacob has earned his reputation as a dependable and skilled law enforcement horse, the St. Petersburg community has come to love him for something equally impressive: his exceptional artistic abilities!
From Badge to Brush: Jacob’s Artistic Journey
The moment Officer Hughes placed a paintbrush in Jacob’s mouth for the first time, something magical happened. Jacob didn’t hesitate—he immediately understood what to do! By holding the brush firmly between his teeth and moving his head in deliberate motions across the canvas, this talented equine artist creates stunning works of art that would make any human painter proud.
Using His Talent for Good
What’s truly special about Jacob is his generous spirit. This gifted horse regularly donates his paintings to local charities, giving back to the community he protects. His artwork has been featured in auctions benefiting the Pet Pal Animal Shelter and the Creative Clay Cultural Arts Center—an organization dedicated to making art accessible to everyone, regardless of socioeconomic background.
Officer Hughes has witnessed firsthand how Jacob balances both sides of his extraordinary life. In fact, during the same week they attended a charity art event to showcase Jacob’s paintings, Hughes and Jacob responded to an emergency call—apprehending a suspect involved in a stabbing that occurred nearby. Talk about a day’s work!
