Retirement isn’t always about leisurely mornings and afternoon naps. For Roberta and David Bartington, their golden years took an unexpected and heartwarming turn when they made the courageous decision to open their home as a sanctuary for neglected and abandoned horses. What began as a compassionate response to a growing problem has evolved into a full-time mission that now saves the lives of over 50 equines.
An Accidental Beginning
The journey wasn’t planned. When the Bartingtons moved to their property, they quickly discovered horses showing up stranded on their land with alarming frequency. Rather than turn them away, they recognized a critical need in their area: a safe haven for injured, emaciated, and traumatized horses that had nowhere else to go.
“This was totally accidental,” recalls Mrs. Bartington. “We have never sold horses and we never thought we would become an animal sanctuary! When we moved here it was clear that a sanctuary was well needed for the area to take in the injured and emaciated ponies.”

Trading Relaxation for Remarkable Work
Instead of the peaceful retirement they’d envisioned, Roberta and David now wake before dawn and work tirelessly until 10 p.m. every single day. It’s exhausting work—feeding, grooming, providing medical care, and offering the emotional support these traumatized horses desperately need. Yet neither of them expresses regret. The fulfillment of giving these animals a second chance makes every long day worthwhile.

Recovery and Forever Homes
Not all horses that arrive at the sanctuary are beyond hope. When the Bartingtons identify horses healthy enough for rehoming, they work diligently to find them proper, loving families. However, many of the animals that come through their gates are so severely neglected or emotionally scarred that they require long-term care and won’t ever be suitable for adoption.
For these gentle souls, the sanctuary becomes their forever home—a place where they can heal at their own pace, surrounded by compassionate caretakers and other horses who understand their journey.

The Heart Behind the Mission
What makes the Woodfield Animal Sanctuary truly special isn’t just the facilities or the numbers—it’s the unwavering commitment of two people who chose compassion over comfort. Mrs. Bartington’s determination to never give up on these poor horses, combined with David’s support, has created a beacon of hope for equines in crisis.

Despite the challenges they face daily, Roberta and David remain energized and more determined than ever to continue their lifesaving work. Their story is a powerful reminder of what one couple can accomplish when they follow their hearts and open their home to those in need.
