British Rider Loses 40kg to Ride Beloved Clydesdale

From Sidelines to Saddle: Sam Winn’s Incredible 40kg Weight Loss Journey

Dreams don’t have expiration dates—and Sam Winn’s remarkable story proves that with determination and heart, anything is possible. This British equestrian’s journey from watching others ride her beloved Clydesdale to competing in international horse trials is nothing short of inspiring for every horse lover out there.

    A Young Rider’s Dream Delayed

Sam Winn has been a passionate rider since childhood, but life had other plans. After taking a break from riding, she returned to the saddle at age 21 in 2007, determined to find her perfect equine partner. That’s when she discovered a four-year-old Clydesdale that would change everything. Though she initially had her doubts, something magical clicked between them—she just knew they belonged together.

What started as a promising partnership, however, became bittersweet. Weight insecurity led Sam to hire other riders to exercise and show her horse, while she watched from the sidelines. She never took official riding lessons and never competed, wrestling with self-doubt that had completely taken over her life.

    Finding Strength Through Loss

“You hear nasty comments too,” Sam recalls. “People saying ‘look at the size of her, good job she’s got a Clydesdale.’ It’s so easy to get stuck in a rut.” At her heaviest, Sam weighed 107kg and felt trapped by the negativity around her.

The turning point came in 2016 when Sam lost her father. In their last conversation, he gently encouraged her to think about her weight and health. That conversation became the catalyst for change. Rather than spiral into grief, Sam channeled her energy into transforming her life. She committed to a healthy lifestyle, combined smart dieting with regular exercise, and impressively lost nearly 40kg.

    The Comeback No One Expected

With her renewed confidence and physical transformation, Sam was ready to reclaim her dream. Her partner Graham became her biggest cheerleader, encouraging her to finally sign up for official riding lessons. Sam took the leap and began working with a dedicated trainer who helped her rebuild her horsemanship skills and competitive mindset.

Their first show together was nerve-wracking for both rider and horse. Years of being sidelined meant Sam had everything to prove—but not to anyone else. She needed to prove it to herself. With consistent training and unwavering determination, Sam and her Clydesdale partnership flourished.

    Living the Dream at Last

The results speak for themselves. Sam and her Clydesdale secured an impressive fifth-place finish at Blair Castle International Horse Trials—a prestigious competition that once seemed like an impossible dream. But for Sam, this accomplishment represents so much more than a ribbon or placement.

“My goal for 2020 is simply to be better than I used to be,” Sam says with humble determination.

    Inspiration for Every Horse Lover

Sam Winn’s story resonates deeply with the equestrian community because it’s about so much more than weight loss. It’s about courage, resilience, and the transformative power of horses. It’s about never letting fear or other people’s opinions keep you from your passion. Whether you’re struggling with self-doubt, taking a break from riding, or dreaming of getting back in the saddle, Sam’s journey reminds us that it’s never too late to chase your equestrian dreams.

The bond between Sam and her Clydesdale proves what we’ve always known: when a rider and horse truly connect, there’s nothing they can’t accomplish together.
