A Legend Leaves Us: Remembering Billy from Black Beauty
Horse movies have a magical way of inspiring us to chase our passions and fall in love with the equestrian world. From childhood to adulthood, these films ignite our imagination and plant dreams in our hearts. Whether you’re an experienced rider or someone who simply adores horses, movies like Black Beauty have the power to captivate audiences across generations—even those with no equestrian background.
The 1994 film adaptation of Anna Sewell’s beloved 1877 novel Black Beauty stands as a timeless masterpiece in equestrian cinema. Directed by Caroline Thompson in her feature film debut, this fifth adaptation brought the autobiographical tale to life with stunning cinematography and an all-star cast including Andrew Knott, Sean Bean, and David Thewlis. Alan Cumming’s narration as the voice of Black Beauty gave the horse’s perspective a voice that touched millions of hearts worldwide.

Billy’s Legacy Ends
We’re heartbroken to share that Billy, the last surviving equine star from the iconic Black Beauty film, has passed away. His departure marks the end of an era in horse cinema history, leaving behind a legacy that touched countless horse lovers around the world.

Billy’s family shared a touching tribute that reveals just how deeply this gentle horse connected with those around him. They wrote: “Since we lost Billy on Monday, his companion Ritchie is having a hard time adjusting to life without him. Ritchie has been Billy’s companion since he was a weanling 6 years ago. That was his only job at the farm, to keep Billy company.”

A Bond That Transcended Time
The family’s account of Ritchie’s grief is a poignant reminder of the deep bonds horses form with one another. “We’ve teamed Ritchie up with Rocket—who is also a companion pony here—and the two seem to be getting along ok,” they continued. “Ritchie still waits by the gate after turning out and calls for a while to see if Billy will come and still calls if he hears Billy’s stable door bolt open (inside the barn behind his stable), but has at least now started to go and graze alongside Rocket.”

The family concluded with words that speak to the universal love Billy inspired: “Seems we aren’t the only ones who miss him.”

Forever in Our Hearts
Billy will forever hold a special place in the hearts of equestrian enthusiasts and film lovers alike. His gentle presence on screen helped introduce millions to the beauty and intelligence of horses, and his real-life journey continued to touch lives long after the cameras stopped rolling. While Billy may no longer be with us, his spirit lives on in every person whose heart was moved by Black Beauty—a true testament to the profound impact one horse can have on the world.
Rest in peace, Billy. You were truly one of a kind.
