One-Eyed Horse Shot 100+ Times Rescued from Slaughter

As horse lovers and animal advocates, we believe every equine deserves kindness, care, and protection. Yet the reality of animal cruelty is heartbreaking—some people hurt horses without hesitation, driven by greed or indifference. What’s tragic is that changing these attitudes seems nearly impossible when cruelty is all someone knows.

The story of Lily, a brave one-eyed mare, is a sobering reminder of why rescue organizations like Omega Horse Rescue do such vital work.

    Lily’s Dark Past

Lily was discovered at a horse auction in New Holland, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania—headed toward an uncertain, dark fate. When Kelly Smith from Omega Horse Rescue found her, the extent of the abuse was shocking: Lily was covered in paint, malnourished, with a matted mane and visible signs of severe trauma.

But the cruelty went far deeper. Lily had been shot over 100 times with a paintball gun before being abandoned. For perspective, paintball guns fire projectiles at approximately 200 miles per hour—imagine the pain and terror this gentle horse endured.

    A Horse in Desperate Need

When Lily arrived at Omega Horse Rescue, her condition was dire. Her head hung low in depression, her one eye was severely swollen shut, and her remaining eye couldn’t see properly. She was broken—physically and emotionally—from the trauma of repeated abuse.

Time was critical. Lily needed immediate medical intervention from specialists who understood equine trauma and rehabilitation.
