Abandoned Foal Finds Comfort With His Special Teddy Bear

We all know how important toys are for children—they’re more than just playthings. For kids who are shy or anxious, toys provide comfort and security, helping them feel safe in an uncertain world. While the horse world might seem different, with kids more interested in spending time around actual animals than toys, the truth is that our equine friends benefit just as much from comforting objects as children do.

Just like dogs are famous for their love of toys, horses and foals can form deep bonds with objects that provide emotional support. This heartwarming story perfectly illustrates just how powerful that connection can be.

A Foal in Crisis Finds Hope

Meet Breeze—a baby foal whose life took a devastating turn when his mother abandoned him shortly after birth. Farmers discovered the helpless newborn just hours old, desperately trying to nurse from their mares. They immediately knew he needed specialized care and brought him to the Mare and Foal Sanctuary.

“When members of the sanctuary’s team arrived at the scene, Breeze collapsed and was in a state of severe shock and dehydration,” explained Syra Bowden, executive director of the Mare and Foal Sanctuary. The tiny foal was fighting for his life, weakened by malnutrition and the emotional trauma of maternal rejection.

    More Than Just Nutrition

While the sanctuary staff could provide Breeze with proper nutrition and veterinary care, there was one thing they simply couldn’t replace: a mother’s love and comfort. As nighttime fell, Breeze’s condition worsened. Young foals naturally huddle close to their mothers after dark, seeking warmth and security. Without this essential emotional bond, Breeze became increasingly depressed and struggled with insomnia, pacing anxiously through the long nights.

    An Unexpected Solution

Recognizing Breeze’s emotional distress, the sanctuary team made a simple but brilliant decision: they gave him a large, soft teddy bear. What happened next was nothing short of miraculous. The moment Breeze made contact with his new plush companion, he visibly relaxed. The bear became his comfort object, his substitute for the mother he’d lost—and his nighttime anxiety melted away.

This touching story reminds us that animals, just like humans, need emotional support to thrive. Physical care alone isn’t enough—foals need comfort, companionship, and security to heal from trauma.
