Rider’s ‘One in a Billion’ Horse Stays Calm Surrounded by Cows

When a herd of cows came charging at Amanda Prior and her horse Max while out hacking on a Dorset bridleway, most horses would have panicked. But not this remarkable 16.1hh eventer. Max’s calm demeanor during the unexpected encounter has earned him the title of “one in a billion” from his devoted rider.

Amanda, an equine product tester and event rider, was enjoying a peaceful moment after an exhilarating gallop when the situation unfolded. “I’d stopped to let Max have some grass—and suddenly the cows came running at us while he was eating,” she recalls. “Max wasn’t bothered at all. He was too interested in his munch!”

What makes this story even more impressive is Max’s unflappable attitude. Despite the commotion around him, the nine-year-old competitor simply continued grazing as the cows approached. Amanda explains: “He’s so chilled he’ll happily walk on the end of the buckle even after a gallop. The cows were being silly and walking into us, but Max was so good. We walked to the gate and he stood while I opened it and went through.”

A Horse with a Unique Personality

Nine-year-old Max isn’t just brave around livestock—he has a quirky personality that sets him apart. Amanda describes him as “quite a character” with an unusual fondness for animals that typically frighten horses.

“He’s really weird and likes different animals,” she laughs. “Most horses are terrified of pigs, but if we ever see any, Max loves to look at them. He’s genuinely curious!”

This combination of bravery, curiosity, and laid-back temperament makes Max an ideal partner for the competitive world. Amanda and Max recently qualified to move up to BE100 level—a significant achievement that speaks volumes about their partnership and Max’s athletic ability.

A Turning Point in Amanda’s Riding Journey

Max’s calm presence has meant far more to Amanda than just a successful competition partner. After losing a beloved horse to sycamore poisoning and then struggling with a horse that terrified her, Amanda had lost her confidence in riding. “I didn’t want to ride anymore,” she admits.

When she tried Max, he wasn’t initially what she was looking for—he was considerably bigger than her previous horses. But something clicked. “I bought him and he’s just been brilliant,” Amanda reflects. “I’ve never felt scared of him. We hack, hunt, and compete a lot, and he’s always really chilled and looking after me.”

Max has restored Amanda’s love of riding and given her the confidence to pursue her equestrian passions without fear. Whether navigating unexpected encounters with livestock, competing at recognized events, or simply hacking out in the countryside, this exceptional horse continues to prove why he deserves the title “one in a billion.”
