Horse Rescue Success: Firefighters Save Marla from Icy Waters
What a way to start 2020! The Liberty Fire Department opened the new year with a heartwarming rescue that proves why they’ve been a pillar of the Missouri community since 1927. Their famous motto says it all: “If they sent us to hell, we’d put it out”—and on a frigid Sunday morning, they put their words into action.
A beautiful horse named Marla found herself in a life-threatening situation when she broke through the thin ice on a stream near Trues Pond. According to Liberty Fire Chief Bill Gillespie, the horse had been walking on what seemed like solid ice when it suddenly gave way beneath her. Time was critical, and every second counted as Marla struggled in the freezing water.
A Community Effort Saves the Day
The rescue wasn’t a solo mission—it was a true team effort that showcases the power of community support. Local neighbors and an animal control officer sprang into action, with one resourceful neighbor bringing his tractor to help pull Marla to safety. After nearly an hour and a half trapped in the icy waters, Marla was finally free from the water’s grip.

Recovery and Veterinary Care
Once Marla reached solid ground, the first responders quickly wrapped her in blankets to combat hypothermia and shock from her traumatic experience. The dedicated team knew that proper aftercare was essential for her survival.
Veterinarian Katherine Williams examined Marla and provided professional medical care. The good news? By that evening, Marla was eating well and showing positive signs of recovery. Her resilience and the quick action of everyone involved gave her a second chance at life.

Gratitude for Heroes in Our Community
The Liberty Fire Department took to Facebook to publicly thank everyone who made this rescue possible. From the animal control officer to the generous neighbors who provided equipment and support, this rescue was truly a community triumph. Without their swift response and willingness to help, Marla’s story could have had a very different ending.
