5 Common Questions Non-Riders Ask Horse Enthusiasts

If you’re a passionate equestrian, you’ve probably heard these questions a hundred times from friends, family, and curious strangers. While non-riders mean well, their questions often reveal just how different life in the saddle really is! Let’s explore the five most common questions riders hear—and what we’re really thinking when we answer them.

    1. “Isn’t It Terribly Dangerous?”

    Horse riding safety concerns

What we say: “There is always some risk involved with horses, but we take precautions to minimize injuries. Proper training, quality equipment, and a calm demeanor go a long way.”

What we’re actually thinking: Not really—our horse spends more time on box rest than actually working! Honestly, hand-walking him after six weeks of enforced stall rest is probably riskier than galloping across a cross-country course. Ever tried equine kite flying? That’s the real danger!

The truth is, experienced riders understand risk management. We wear helmets, take lessons, and respect our horses’ boundaries. Yes, accidents happen—but so do they in many sports.

    2. “Have You Ever Fallen Off?”

What we say: “Yes, but it’s no big deal. All riders take tumbles now and then.”

What we’re actually thinking: Yes, WAY more times than I’d care to admit. And it’s time to replace yet another helmet (or three). We’ve got bruises in places we didn’t know could bruise, and our relationship with the ground is… complicated.

Every experienced rider has a collection of fall stories. It’s practically a rite of passage! The key is getting back in the saddle—literally and figuratively.

    3. “So… You Have to Pay for Stabling and Feed?”

    Horse stables and feed costs

What we say: “Well, I don’t have my own land, so yes, my horse is on livery at a local yard. The costs include stabling, feed, farrier services, and veterinary care.”

What we’re actually thinking: Ha! If only! No, my horse definitely doesn’t have a Saturday newspaper delivery job, and I’m pretty sure Tesco wouldn’t accept him as a personal shopper either—despite his excellent taste in treats.

Horse ownership is a genuine financial commitment. Between feed, livery, farrier visits, vet bills, and competition fees, our bank accounts take quite a hit. But every penny is worth it for the love of our equine partners.

    4. “Do You Do Dressage?”

What we say: “Yes, actually! We’ve been placed at the Area Festivals this year.” (Followed by the inevitable blank stare…)

What we’re actually thinking: We appreciate the effort to use the correct terminology! Though if fancy pirouettes and floating extended trots across the field while we’re just trying to catch our horse count, then we’re basically Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro. Right?

Dressage is the art and science of training horses to perform precise, collected movements. It requires years of dedication, partnership, and countless hours of practice. But try explaining that to someone who thinks dressage is just “fancy riding!”

    5. “Have You Ridden at Badminton, Burghley, or Horse of the Year Show?”

What we say: “Not yet, but maybe one day!”

What we’re actually thinking: Only in our wildest dreams! These are the Mount Everest moments for equestrians—the competitions we aspire to, watch religiously, and fantasize about competing in.

Events like Badminton, Burghley, Olympia, and Horse of the Year Show represent the pinnacle of equestrianism. They’re the aspirational goals that keep us motivated, training harder, and believing in the possibility of reaching the top levels of our sport.

    The Bottom Line

Non-riders might not always understand our passion for horses, but these questions remind us why we love what we do. Sure, our sport requires dedication, comes with risks, and demands serious financial investment—but the bond we share with our horses makes it all worthwhile. So the next time someone asks you one of these questions, smile knowingly and remember: they’re just trying to understand a world that’s as magical as it is misunderstood.

    Happy riding! 🐴
