From Auction Block to Forever Home: One Foal’s Journey to Love
Sometimes the most heartwarming horse stories begin in the darkest places. For a tiny foal named Skye, his journey started at a Pennsylvania horse auction—before he was even born. His mother, Ruby, arrived at Thornbury Farm Stables so severely malnourished that no one suspected she was carrying a precious new life inside her.

A Mother’s Trauma: When Instinct Isn’t Enough
When Penny Parker, the dedicated barn manager at Thornbury Farm in West Chester, Pennsylvania, noticed Ruby’s swelling belly, she initially thought it was a parasite issue. A call to the local veterinarian revealed an incredible surprise: Ruby was several months pregnant! On April 29th, an adorable lanky foal arrived, and everyone at the barn instantly fell head over heels for little Skye.
Everyone, that is, except his own mother.
Ruby’s violent rejection of her newborn foal was heartbreaking to witness. She wouldn’t allow Skye to nurse and even kicked at the helpless day-old baby. Parker suspected Ruby’s traumatic past—whatever horrors she endured before rescue—had left deep psychological scars. The mama mare appeared to be suffering from equine PTSD, unable to access her maternal instincts despite everyone’s best efforts.

A Rescue Team Steps In
As darkness fell and temperatures dropped, Penny Parker and her boyfriend, Dave Manning, faced a critical decision. Without his mother’s milk, Skye wouldn’t survive the night. The couple brought the lonely foal home, made him a cozy bed on a mattress, and committed to round-the-clock bottle feeding.
But bottle feeding alone wasn’t enough. Skye desperately needed the colostrum and antibodies from his mother’s milk to build a strong immune system. When his health continued to decline, Skye required a blood transfusion to boost his colostrum levels. The Parker household became a 24/7 NICU unit for this special little horse.

Enter Lucy: The Surrogate Mom Who Saved the Day
That’s when a beautiful solution galloped into Skye’s life—Lucy, a retired racehorse with a heart as big as Texas. Lucy had already proven herself as a surrogate mother to another rejected foal, making her the perfect candidate to step into this role.
The introduction was pure magic. “They were in love,” Parker told the Dodo, her voice full of wonder. “She’s lying next to him, standing over him while he sleeps. They’re running around together, connected at the hip.”
Lucy’s maternal instincts kicked in immediately, providing everything Skye needed—not just nutrition, but the emotional comfort and security that only a mother’s presence can offer.

A Triumph of Love and Dedication
Skye’s story is a beautiful testament to the power of compassion and determination. Despite his rocky start in life—abandoned by his traumatized biological mother—this brave little foal has found his place in a loving community. With round-the-clock care from his human parents and the unconditional love of his surrogate mare, Skye is thriving and growing stronger every day.
The bond between Skye and Lucy reminds us why rescue work matters. It shows that with patience, creativity, and heart, there’s always a solution for animals in crisis. As for Skye? He’s destined to become a beautiful, strong horse—one whose life is built on a foundation of love from those who refused to give up on him.
