Orphaned Horse Bebe Only Sleeps Holding Her Mom’s Hand

There’s a special bond that forms between horses and their caretakers, and Bebe from Whisker Woods Sanctuary in Canberra, Australia, is the perfect example of just how deep that connection can run. This adorable and wonderfully demanding rescue horse has captured hearts everywhere with her endearing habit of needing to hold her mom’s hand before she can drift off to sleep.

A Chance Encounter That Changed Everything

Seven years ago, Whisker Woods Sanctuary founder Shannon Mortlock met Bebe’s mother, Emily, while purchasing the property in Canberra. Emily had been a wandering presence in the area for years, and local farmers had grown increasingly frustrated with her—one farmer even threatened to shoot her for damaging his fences.

“Local farmers said that Emily had been wandering the area for years,” Mortlock told The Dodo. “One of the farmers had threatened to shoot her, as she had damaged his fences.” Rather than accepting this grim fate, Mortlock managed to herd Emily to safety on her property. Within a few months, Mortlock discovered something unexpected: Emily was pregnant.

An Impossible Choice and a Life-Saving Decision

When Bebe was born, tragedy struck almost immediately. Emily rejected her newborn completely, kicking the vulnerable foal whenever she tried to approach. Desperate to help, Mortlock called a veterinarian for advice and was given two heartbreaking options: either allow nature to take its course and let Bebe die, or hand-raise the foal herself.

There was no hesitation in Mortlock’s response: “I wasn’t going to just stand there and let her die.”

Bottle Feeds, Sleepless Nights, and Unbreakable Bonds

What followed were months of round-the-clock bottle feedings, starting with the crucial colostrum—that special first milk packed with essential proteins and vitamins that newborn foals absolutely need to survive. Bebe moved into Mortlock’s home, and the two quickly developed an inseparable bond that would define their lives together.

Today, years later, Bebe has grown into a healthy, happy horse—though she’s admittedly a bit of a cheeky character with very particular preferences. The most endearing quirk? Bebe simply cannot fall asleep at night without having her hoof in contact with some part of Mortlock’s body—whether it’s her hand, arm, or anywhere within reach.

It’s a small price to pay for saving a life, and it’s a beautiful reminder of the profound connections we can forge with horses when we open our hearts to their needs. Bebe’s story is one of compassion, dedication, and the incredible power of equine-human bonding.
