Some stories just warm your heart and remind you why we’re so passionate about horses. Today, we’re sharing one of the most incredible equine rescue transformations we’ve ever witnessed—a story that proves the healing power of compassion, dedication, and the unbreakable bond between a young girl and her four-legged friend.
A Horse Discovered in Desperate Need
In August 2014, a severely neglected horse was discovered abandoned in Bourbon County, Kentucky. Named Jo Jo’s Gypsy, this beautiful mare weighed just 758 pounds—dangerously underweight and in heartbreaking condition. Many people doubted she would survive. But fate had other plans.

The Beginning of a Remarkable Recovery
Jo Jo was transferred to Our Mims Retirement Haven, a horse sanctuary and rescue center in Paris, Kentucky, where the real work began. Jeanne Mirabito, the facility’s owner, had worked with many rescued horses before, but she had never seen one in such dire condition. She knew Jo Jo’s road to recovery would be long and challenging, but she was determined to help.
That’s when young Kaylee—Jeanne’s granddaughter—came into the picture. Kaylee visited the sanctuary regularly, and when she first saw Jo Jo, something magical happened. Despite the horse’s skeletal appearance and poor health, Kaylee saw potential, spirit, and a fighter. She immediately felt a deep connection with the struggling mare.

Love, Care, and an Unbreakable Bond
What makes this story truly special is the bond that formed between Kaylee and Jo Jo. With consistent care, proper nutrition, and most importantly, Kaylee’s unwavering love and attention, Jo Jo began to improve—slowly but steadily. Day by day, the horse gained strength. The pair became nearly inseparable, and Jo Jo’s will to live seemed to grow stronger with each visit from her devoted young friend.

Community Support Changes Everything
Jo Jo’s story touched the hearts of many, and a dedicated nonprofit organization stepped in to raise significant funds to cover her medical expenses and care. This generous community support ensured that Jo Jo received everything she needed to fully recover—veterinary care, quality feed, and the sanctuary staff’s expertise.

The Incredible Transformation is Complete
Today, Jo Jo’s Gypsy is almost unrecognizable compared to the skeletal horse found in Kentucky just years ago. She’s healthy, strong, and vibrant. In an amazing milestone, Jo Jo has even been cleared by veterinarians for light riding! This once-abandoned mare—who people thought wouldn’t survive—is now thriving and enjoying life as a horse should.

A Lesson in Hope and Determination
Jo Jo’s story is more than just a rescue success. It’s a testament to the incredible impact that love, proper care, and community compassion can have on even the most damaged souls—equine or otherwise. Young Kaylee’s dedication shows us that you don’t need to be an adult to make a real difference in an animal’s life. Sometimes all it takes is an open heart and unwavering commitment.
