Girl Trains Cow to Jump Like Horse After Parents Say No

From Horseback Dreams to Jumping Cow Champion: Hannah’s Incredible Journey

Sometimes the best adventures come from unexpected places. When 11-year-old Hannah Simpson’s parents told her that owning a horse was too expensive, she didn’t give up on her equestrian dreams—she simply found a creative alternative that would capture hearts everywhere.

    A Dairy Farm Dream Begins

Living on a dairy farm in Invercargill, New Zealand, Hannah had always dreamed of pursuing show-jumping. But when a horse proved financially out of reach, she did what any determined young equestrian would do: she looked around her own backyard and spotted something special in a Swiss Brown cow named Lilac.

“Lilac was only six months old then and I was just a midget,” Hannah recalled in an interview with The Guardian. “It was a dare from my brother to jump on and she seemed OK with it so we kept going. Before then I’d only ridden a pony twice, and a sheep.”

What started as a sibling dare quickly blossomed into something extraordinary. Hannah discovered that Lilac shared her passion for jumping—the cow had been naturally leaping out of the cowshed since she was young. It was the perfect match.

“I have always loved jumping, I always wanted to do show-jumping on a horse,” Hannah explained. “And Lilac was always jumping out of the cowshed when she was young so I think she likes it, too.”

Using patience, training, and her natural horsemanship instincts, Hannah began with small obstacles. “We started her off with stepping over logs and it just got bigger and bigger,” she said.

    A Bovine Athlete is Born

Now at 7 years old, Lilac is no ordinary farm cow. The extraordinary animal can clear jumps up to 5 feet high—a height that would impress any equestrian enthusiast. Hannah regularly rides her best friend around the farm, and together they’ve proven that you don’t need a purebred horse to experience the thrill of jumping sports.

Why This Story Matters to Horse Lovers

Hannah’s journey reminds us that passion for equestrian sports comes in many forms. While traditional horses remain the gold standard for jumping and show-jumping, her story celebrates the bond between rider and animal, the importance of creativity when facing obstacles, and the incredible athleticism found in unexpected places.
