The crowd at Claremorris Agricultural Show in Ireland couldn’t believe their eyes when a sturdy Irish cob soared over a towering 1.80-meter puissance wall. This wasn’t just any jump—it was a breathtaking moment that shattered every preconceived notion about what cobs can achieve in the showjumping arena.

The Underdog Story Nobody Expected
When most people think of Irish cobs, showjumping prowess isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. These sturdy, charismatic horses are beloved for their gentle nature and versatility, but clearing walls at elite heights? That’s a different ballgame entirely. Yet here was Blue, a powerhouse on four hooves with “dinner plate” hooves and the athletic ability of a Thoroughbred, proving everyone wrong.
Even Blue’s owner and rider, Tara, was astonished by his performance. “I didn’t think it would go so high and I didn’t think the show would be as big as it was!” she admitted. “He’s never jumped anything that high. He competes up to 1.25m in showjumping—he’s just a freak. He’s a freak of nature because he’s heavy, with hooves the size of dinner plates and he’s as athletic as any blood horse.”
Heritage Meets Heart: What Makes Blue Special?
Blue’s pedigree is as unique as his abilities. Born from a 14.2hh colored cob dam and sired by a Clydesdale stallion, Blue carries genes from multiple equestrian worlds. Perhaps that’s where his exceptional athleticism comes from—a blend of pony agility, draft horse power, and pure heart.

Tara has owned Blue since he was just one year old, giving them over a decade to build an unshakeable partnership. “I trust that horse with my life, which is mad, but I really do,” she shares with genuine emotion. That bond is evident in every stride Blue takes over a fence.
Breaking Stereotypes, One Jump at a Time
Despite her incredible achievement, Tara remains humble about her accomplishments. “I’m just an amateur and it’s just a cob,” she says with characteristic modesty. But she’s on a mission to change minds across the equestrian world.
“A lot of people pre-judge cobs,” Tara explains. “I know when I went into the warm-up, people thought, ‘Look at the hairy cob!’ Cobs are extremely talented, but they are judged. I just want the world to know that cobs can do it just as well as blood horses.”
It’s a message that resonates deeply in a sport where certain breeds have long dominated the spotlight. The truth is, athletic ability, determination, and heart aren’t exclusive to any single breed. Blue is living proof of that.
The Future Is Bright
With Blue’s recent triumph at Claremorris, Tara shows no signs of slowing down. She’s committed to continuing their jumping journey and proving that cobs deserve equal respect in the showjumping community. “I would never part with him,” she declares proudly. “I’m so proud of him; he’s such an honest, genuine horse.”
For anyone who’s ever been told their horse “isn’t the jumping type,” Blue’s story is pure inspiration. Sometimes the most extraordinary moments come from the most unexpected sources—all it takes is faith, training, and an unwillingness to accept limitations.
