In 2013, Irish farmer Cormac Williams experienced something truly magical on his 35-acre farm: his beloved eight-year-old donkey, Tulip, gave birth to twin daughters around Christmas. The arrival of Snow and Flake was nothing short of a miracle in the equine world.
Twin births in donkeys are extraordinarily rare—so rare that Williams’ experience represents a once-in-a-lifetime event. “It’s a once in a lifetime event that you get two live twins,” he shared with the Irish Examiner. Historically, when donkey twins are born, one foal typically doesn’t survive. But Snow and Flake had other plans.
Against All Odds: Two Healthy Foals Thrive
When Williams went to check on Tulip during her foaling, he was stunned to discover not one but two healthy, vigorous foals. Within just two weeks, Snow and Flake were already scampering around his farm “like gazelles,” full of energy and vitality. It was a remarkable outcome that defied the typical statistics for donkey twin births.
A Special Bond: Tulip’s Journey
Tulip’s story is particularly special because she was born and raised on Williams’ farm, making this miracle even more personal for the devoted farmer. Her mothering instincts proved exceptional as she nurtured both Snow and Flake through their critical early weeks.
While the days of working donkeys may be behind us, Williams is passionate about their value as companion animals. “They’re great as pets,” he explained to the Independent. “They’re gentle animals and in winter they’re great for foraging and keeping down the weeds.”
