Osborne Horse Trials 2019 Cancelled: Low Entry Numbers Force Cancellation

In a disappointing turn of events for the equestrian community, organizers have announced the cancellation of the highly anticipated Osborne Horse Trials, originally scheduled for Tuesday, July 23, and Wednesday, July 24, 2019. The decision came down to one critical factor: insufficient competitor entries to sustain a quality two-day event.

A Heartbreaking Decision for the Equestrian Community

The cancellation came as a shock to event organizers, who had invested considerable time and effort into making this year’s competition exceptional. Despite innovative changes and exciting developments in the works, the organizers found themselves facing an impossible situation—not enough riders to create a competitive field worthy of the event’s reputation.

“We are devastated to have to announce the cancellation of Osborne Horse Trials 2019,” the organizers stated in their official announcement. “We have worked hard to deliver the event again this year, with many changes and developments planned. However, we now find ourselves in a position where there are not enough entries for the competition. We do not feel that we can continue with the event if we do not have enough competitors to provide good sport for the two days.”

    Partners Express Deep Disappointment

Stuart Buntine, director of the event, elaborated on the agonizing decision: “We are absolutely devastated to have to take this decision. Together with English Heritage, we have been working hard to ensure that this year’s event was as exciting as ever. The Island community has embraced the event and we are very sad that we are not able to bring the sport back to Osborne this year.”

Buntine emphasized the importance of maintaining standards, explaining that continuing without a strong competitor field would have compromised the quality of sport. “Unfortunately, it is not possible to continue if we do not have a field of competitors,” he noted. “We apologize for the lateness of this announcement, and we are grateful for your support of the event.”

Support from English Heritage and the Local Community

The cancellation is particularly bittersweet given the strong backing from English Heritage and the local Island community, both of which had embraced the event and looked forward to its return. The organizers expressed their gratitude for this support while acknowledging the disappointment on all sides.

What’s Next for Osborne Horse Trials?

While the 2019 event won’t take place, there’s a glimmer of hope for the future. Event organizers have indicated they’d love to bring the horse trials back to the Island, but they need to carefully assess how to boost entries and ensure the competition maintains its high standards.

“We would love to bring the horse trials back to the Island, but we obviously need to assess how we do this to ensure we provide top class sport,” Buntine concluded.

As the equestrian community processes this news, many are left wondering what changes might be implemented to attract more competitors and keep this prestigious event thriving. Time will tell whether Osborne Horse Trials makes a triumphant return or becomes a chapter in the sport’s history.
