Young Mare Euthanized After Discovered with Fractured Pelvis

A heartbreaking incident in Wales has left animal welfare officials searching for answers and justice for a young mare who suffered a devastating injury. The grey horse, believed to be just two years old, was discovered collapsed and in severe distress on land near Aberfan in Merthyr Tydfil by a compassionate member of the public who immediately contacted the RSPCA.

    A Tragic Discovery

When RSPCA Cymru inspector Gemma Cooper arrived at the scene, she was met with a deeply distressing sight. The young mare was clearly suffering—severely underweight and struggling on the bare, churned ground that bore the marks of her desperate attempts to stand. The condition of the surrounding area told a troubling story of neglect, with only vegetable peelings, broccoli, and cabbage leaves provided as sustenance.

“This poor horse was clearly in a bad way—she was underweight and had a fractured pelvis,” Ms. Cooper explained. “A vet on-site deemed that sadly her condition was too serious and decided that the best thing for her was to put her to sleep to prevent any further suffering.”

    The Search for Answers

What makes this case particularly concerning is that the mare was microchipped—a crucial tool for reuniting lost animals with their owners. However, the chip number on file was no longer active, suggesting either a change of ownership or deliberate removal from records.

“But it means she most probably has an owner out there, and we’d like to speak to them,” Ms. Cooper emphasized. The RSPCA is urging anyone with information about this grey mare to come forward and contact their inspectors immediately.

    A Call for Justice

This tragic case serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of responsible horse ownership and proper care. Young horses require adequate nutrition, shelter, and medical attention—not vegetable scraps and abandonment. If you have any information about this mare’s identity or the circumstances surrounding her condition, please contact the RSPCA immediately. Your information could prevent similar tragedies and ensure that other animals receive the care they deserve.

The equestrian community stands united in demanding accountability for those who neglect their animals and a commitment to protecting vulnerable horses from preventable suffering.
