Black Beauty’s Last Living Star Horse: Billy Blindaj at 31

Movies have an incredible way of shaping our passions and dreams, especially when we’re young. In the equestrian world, cinema has given us some truly unforgettable stories—and none more iconic than Black Beauty. If you’re a horse lover, there’s a good chance this classic film touched your heart and inspired your connection with horses.

The 1994 film adaptation of Anna Sewell’s beloved 1877 novel became a cultural phenomenon, introducing millions of viewers to the emotional journey of a magnificent black horse. Directed by Caroline Thompson in her feature directorial debut, the film features the distinctive narration of Alan Cumming as Black Beauty himself. It’s the fifth feature film adaptation of Sewell’s timeless story, and arguably one of the most memorable.

The Last Survivor: Billy Blindaj’s Amazing Story

Here’s something that will warm your heart: the main horse star from that iconic 1994 film is still alive! Meet Billy Blindaj, the last surviving equine actor from the production. Now approaching his 31st birthday in August, Billy represents a living connection to one of cinema’s greatest horse films.

Billy wasn’t alone in his starring role—five black horses were used throughout filming to bring Black Beauty to life. However, Billy earned special distinction when he was recently awarded a plaque by the pet sitting company Trusted Housesitters, naming him Britain’s best-loved horse actor. It’s an honor he truly deserves.

From Russian Racehorse to Hollywood Star

Billy’s journey is as remarkable as any Hollywood story. Born in Russia, he began his life as a harness racehorse before being imported to the United Kingdom at just three years old. That’s when his life changed forever—he was cast as the lead in the Black Beauty film.

On set, Billy met Louise Maryon, then 42 years old, who was working as a groom. Louise fell in love with the charismatic young horse, and after Billy completed his starring role—including several pivotal scenes and even being ridden by acclaimed actor Sean Bean—she made the beautiful decision to give him a forever home. That was over 26 years ago.
