Horse and Dogs Hero: How Equestrian Saved Missing Toddler

A Heroic Rescue on Horseback: How One Rider and Her Dogs Saved a Lost Child

Life doesn’t always go according to plan, but how we respond to emergencies defines our character. This is the inspiring true story of little Iris, a toddler who went missing in the Moalalla River Recreation Area while spending time with her grandmother, Gayla Ann. Fortunately, a chance encounter with an equestrian and her furry companions turned a frightening situation into a heartwarming tale of community heroes.

    The Moment Everything Changed

On that fateful day, Tammy Stevens set out for a peaceful trail ride on her beloved horse, Bo, accompanied by her two loyal Australian Shepherds, Wilson and Maddie. What started as a simple nature excursion through the scenic Oregon wilderness would soon become an unforgettable rescue mission that would capture the hearts of an entire community.

Back on the trail, tragedy struck when little Iris wandered away from her grandmother. After searching desperately for 15 minutes with no sign of the toddler, Gayla made the critical decision to call for professional help. The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office sprang into action, coordinating a comprehensive search effort that included multiple sheriff’s deputies, local police officers, and even nearby loggers.

Nature’s Search Party: Horse and Canine Heroes

As word of the missing child spread, Tammy and her equine-canine team joined the organized search effort. What unfolded next showcased the incredible instincts of both horses and dogs in emergency situations. Riding along the forest trails, Tammy allowed Wilson and Maddie to use their natural tracking abilities, sniffing the ground below as Bo carefully navigated the terrain.

The search area was challenging—the trail split into four different directions, making the task of finding a small child in the wilderness incredibly difficult. But approximately 20 minutes into their search, Tammy heard the faint cry of a child echoing through the forest. Trust her instincts and her dogs’ exceptional tracking abilities, Tammy followed as Wilson led her up what she estimates to be a steep 70-foot slope.

A Happy Ending Made Possible by Heroes

At the top of the slope, Tammy discovered little Iris alive and relatively unharmed, though understandably frightened and in tears. After being missing for over two hours, the toddler’s ordeal had finally come to an end. Thanks to Tammy’s quick thinking, Bo’s steady footing on treacherous terrain, and the exceptional search skills of Wilson and Maddie, a potential tragedy was averted.

Tammy carefully made her way back down the slope with Iris safely reunited with her family. The entire neighborhood—and indeed, the wider equestrian community—has embraced this modern-day rescue story with gratitude and admiration.

The Power of Equestrian Partnership in Emergency Response

This rescue story perfectly illustrates why horses remain invaluable in search and rescue operations. While modern technology plays an important role in emergency response, nothing quite compares to the accessibility, intuition, and natural tracking abilities that equestrians and their animal partners bring to the table. Bo’s ability to navigate steep, wooded terrain where vehicles cannot reach proved essential to finding Iris.

Similarly, the intelligence and training of working dogs like Wilson and Maddie demonstrate why these animals continue to be heroes in rescue operations worldwide. The combination of horse, dog, and human cooperation created the perfect team for this mission.

This heartwarming rescue serves as a reminder to all of us in the equestrian community of the meaningful role our horses play in everyday life. Whether competing in the arena or serving as unlikely heroes in the wilderness, horses continue to demonstrate their remarkable bond with humans and their capacity to make a real difference.
