A Miracle Birth: Twins Against the Odds
If you’ve been around horses for any length of time, you’ve probably heard that twin pregnancies in equines are incredibly risky. Unlike human pregnancies, where carrying twins is relatively routine, horse pregnancies with multiple foals are fraught with complications and heartbreak. The survival rate is discouragingly low, and even when twin foals do make it into the world, they often face life-threatening challenges in their first days.
That’s why when a successful twin birth happens—especially with both foals healthy and strong—it’s nothing short of a miracle. This is precisely the incredible story of Tiki, a gorgeous American Paint Horse, and her remarkable journey to motherhood.

Meet Tiki and Her Beautiful Twins
Tiki, a 16-year-old mare, was already considered a bit mature for such a complicated pregnancy. But her dedicated owners, the Mason family, remained hopeful throughout her gestation. A series of careful ultrasounds confirmed that both foals were developing beautifully, and when the time came, both babies arrived safe and sound at Conley and Koontz Equine Hospital in Columbia City, Indiana.
The twins were born just 10 minutes apart at midnight—with the colt arriving first at a healthy 86 pounds, followed by his smaller sister, the filly, at 59 pounds. But here’s where it gets even more remarkable: despite being the lighter of the two, the little filly proved to be the stronger foal. She was on her feet and walking around within just 10 minutes of birth!

The Unique Gift of Boy and Girl Twins
What makes this birth even more extraordinary is that Tiki delivered twins of opposite genders—a colt and a filly. The little colt was named Woodcock Pocket, while his spunky sister became Charming Opal. Twin foals of different sexes are exceptionally rare, adding another layer of wonder to this already remarkable story.
The combination of factors that made this pregnancy so special can’t be overlooked: an older mare, a twin pregnancy, successful delivery, and foals of different genders all coming together in one happy ending. This is the kind of story that reminds us why horse owners fall in love with these magnificent creatures.
