Sometimes the best investments in life can’t be measured in pounds and pence – and Anne Coombs knows this better than anyone. Her beloved gelding, Carbonado Joe, a part-bred Friesian purchased for just £1, has recently claimed the prestigious 70cm club title at the British Showjumping national championships. But this remarkable pony’s journey is about so much more than winning titles.

From Difficult Loan to Beloved Champion
Anne’s story with Carbonado Joe began around six years ago when she took the gelding on loan. “He was nappy – really nappy – but a nice person who just needed a different approach,” Anne recalls fondly. Like many horses, Joe simply needed someone who understood him and was willing to invest the time to bring out his best qualities.
After just two or three months, Joe’s original owner decided to part with him as a wedding gift of sorts. “The owner was getting married and asked if I wanted him,” Anne explains. “I was at work at the time, but I paid the £1 by bank transfer straight away.” What started as a modest financial transaction would become one of Anne’s most treasured relationships.

A Partner Through Adversity
While Joe’s athletic abilities are clearly impressive – he’s a solid all-rounder despite his passionate hatred of dressage – his real value to Anne goes far deeper. When Anne faced serious health challenges, Carbonado Joe became her anchor and motivation.
“My body was broken,” Anne shares candidly. “I had a couple of back operations and I was struggling.” During her recovery period, her friend Melanie Widdows rode Joe in the 80cm club championship while Anne focused on healing. But the true magic happened in those early morning moments when Anne needed a reason to get out of bed. “He made me get up in the morning, and the better he got, the more I was up for getting my back sorted,” she explains.
Today, Anne manages her condition with proper support and care, recognizing that some days she simply can’t ride. Yet Joe’s presence in her life remains constant and invaluable – a quiet comfort that goes beyond sport.

Championship Glory and Pure Character
This was Anne and Joe’s first year competing in British Showjumping club jumping, making their 70cm title win even sweeter. With tough competition throughout the day, Anne found herself in the enviable position of going last with a genuine chance at victory.
“I was last to go and I knew I had a chance if we could leave them up,” she recalls. “He knew he’d won – I couldn’t hold him in the lap of honor, then he came piaffing up to all his friends afterward. He’s a real character.”
This moment perfectly captures who Carbonado Joe is: not just a talented athlete, but a spirited personality with heart and presence. His joy at winning was as genuine as Anne’s delight in his triumph.

The Best Pound Ever Spent
When asked about her prize pony, Anne doesn’t hesitate: “I’d never part with him, even if someone offered me millions of pounds. He’s my best friend, the best horse I’ve ever had – and the best £1 I’ve ever spent.”
Carbonado Joe’s story reminds us why we fall in love with horses in the first place. It’s not just about competition ribbons or championship titles – though those are wonderful! It’s about the profound connection between horse and human, the way a patient, kind approach can transform a “nappy” gelding into a champion, and how our equine partners can become our greatest healers and cheerleaders when life gets tough.
For Anne and Joe, that £1 investment has paid dividends that no amount of money could ever quantify. And that, dear readers, is the real victory.
