Remembrance Sunday holds a special place in British hearts, observed each year on the second Sunday of November. This national holiday honors the brave Commonwealth military personnel and service members who made the ultimate sacrifice in World War I and subsequent conflicts. For many horse lovers, this poignant day takes on even deeper meaning when combined with their passion for equestrians.
The iconic red poppy has become the enduring symbol of Remembrance Sunday, its powerful image inspired by the flowers that bloomed across the scarred battlefields of Belgium and northern France. It’s a symbol of resilience, remembrance, and hope—one that photographer Amy Lathrope brilliantly captured in an unforgettable equestrian tribute.
A Years-Long Dream Comes to Life
Amy Lathrope, a talented British equine photographer, had envisioned this special photoshoot for years. She partnered with accomplished rider Sophie Seymour and her remarkable KWPN gelding, Roo, to create something truly extraordinary. The centerpiece? A stunning two-acre poppy field near Sophie’s home.
“It was all a bit last minute,” Amy recalls. “I saw a post online about a two-acre poppy field which was near Sophie. She managed to find the landowner and they said we could use it, but we would have to be quick as it was due to be ploughed.”
Working against the clock only added to the magic of the moment. What emerged is a breathtaking visual tribute that captures both the elegance of horsemanship and the solemn beauty of remembrance.
The Perfect Shot: A Furry Assist
Every great photograph has a story, and this one is no exception. During the shoot, an unexpected helper appeared on set: Amy’s father and his dog. As he walked near Roo, the curious gelding’s attention was captured completely. That moment of distraction proved to be the photographer’s golden opportunity—Amy captured some of the most stunning images of the day, with Sophie and Roo framed perfectly against the vibrant red poppies.
The result is a series of photographs that seamlessly blend the equestrian world with a meaningful historical tribute. These images serve as a powerful reminder of sacrifice and honor, told through the lens of a beautiful horse and dedicated rider.
