Teen Honors Fallen Soldiers at Prom in Patriotic Handmade Dress

When Aubrey Headon from Rochelle Township High School in Illinois decided to make her senior prom unforgettable, she didn’t just think about herself — she thought about the heroes who gave everything to protect our freedom.

After meeting Gretchen Catherwood, a Gold Star mother whose son, a Marine in the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, made the ultimate sacrifice, Aubrey’s perspective shifted. Inspired by Gretchen’s founding of the Darkhorse Lodge — a sanctuary dedicated to supporting combat veterans — Aubrey knew she had to do something meaningful. “I don’t want them to fade into nothing,” she shared with Yahoo Lifestyle, capturing the heart of her mission.

    A Two-Year Labor of Love

Rather than settling for a store-bought gown, Aubrey embarked on an ambitious two-year project to design and create an original prom dress that would serve as a powerful tribute. The result? A stunning navy blue gown that transforms into a wearable American flag, complete with elegant red and white ribbons cascading down the skirt and a patriotic starry blue halter top.

    Every Ribbon Tells a Story

But here’s what made Aubrey’s dress go viral and capture hearts across the nation: each of the 25 red and white ribbons hanging from her skirt features the name of a fallen member of the 3rd Battalion. The dress became a living memorial — a beautiful way to ensure these heroes would never be forgotten.

There’s one black ribbon among them, standing out with profound significance. It reads “Tyler Smith” — a member of the Illinois Army National Guard and a graduate of Aubrey’s own high school, who tragically died in a drowning accident.

A Symbol of Service and Remembrance

Aubrey’s prom dress transcends fashion — it’s a statement of respect, gratitude, and unwavering commitment to honoring those who served. In choosing to wear these names on the biggest night of her high school career, she ensured that Tyler Smith and all 25 service members from the 3rd Battalion would be celebrated and remembered.

This incredible teen demonstrates that age is no barrier to making a meaningful impact. Her beautiful soul and thoughtful tribute remind us all of the importance of remembering our fallen heroes. We wish Aubrey nothing but the very best as she moves forward into her future — clearly a bright one for someone with such compassion and determination.
