I’m grateful I discovered the equestrian world because it brought so much joy and meaning into my life. But alongside the beauty of horses comes a harsh reality: many face cruelty, neglect, and abandonment at the hands of humans. Tragically, in many parts of the world, animal welfare laws remain weak or unenforced, leaving vulnerable horses with little protection.
Beyond human cruelty, nature itself presents devastating challenges. Severe droughts can be catastrophic for wild horses and other wildlife. During one particularly brutal drought—a prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall—nearly 200 wild horses perished. Yet amid this tragedy, one remarkable filly named Mila survived against all odds.
A Filly’s Fight for Survival
When rescuers discovered Mila, she was orphaned and in critical condition. Her mother had succumbed to the drought, leaving the vulnerable youngster alone and struggling in the harsh wilderness. Despite her dire circumstances, Mila’s rescuers worked tirelessly to restore her health and give her a second chance at life.

Around the same time Mila was rescued, another mare had lost her own foal and was grieving deeply. When the two were introduced, it was as if fate had orchestrated a perfect healing moment.
