From Rescue to Redemption: The Remarkable Story of Dun Dreaming
Sometimes the most beautiful stories come from the darkest places. Meet Dun Dreaming, a 10.3hh dun pony whose journey from abandonment to love will warm your heart and remind you why animal rescue matters so much in our equestrian community.

A Desperate Situation: Discovery in a Muddy Field
In March 2014, a concerned member of the public spotted a heartbreaking scene in Aberdeenshire: three ponies abandoned in a waterlogged, muddy field with virtually no grazing available. Among them was “Dream,” a five-year-old dun pony who was not only malnourished and neglected—she was also in foal. Her hooves were painfully overgrown, and her condition was visibly poor. The concerned citizen immediately contacted World Horse Welfare, sparking a rescue that would change everything.

The Road to Recovery at Belwade Farm
Dream found sanctuary at World Horse Welfare’s Belwade Farm center in Aboyne, where the dedicated team worked tirelessly to restore her health and dignity. Shortly after her arrival, she gave birth to a healthy foal, lovingly named Jelly Tot. For the first time, Dream experienced proper care, quality nutrition, and genuine compassion. She was safe. She was home.
But her story was far from over.
A Second Chance at Connection
In October 2015, Alison Gibb discovered Dream while browsing the World Horse Welfare website. Alison wasn’t just looking for any pony—she was searching for a very specific kind of companion. Her beloved 17.2hh warmblood mare, Farina, had recently passed away, leaving Alison’s other horse, Fudge, devastated and inconsolable. Fudge had lost her best friend, and Alison was determined to help her grieve.

“A friend recommended World Horse Welfare and I went online and spotted Dun Dreaming,” recalls Alison. “She sounded like a perfect best friend for poor Fudge who was so distraught having lost her old companion.”
When they met Dream in person, Alison was struck by her beauty despite her nervousness and fear. “The staff at Belwade were fantastic and we met a very nervous and frightened but beautiful Welsh pony, and I immediately clicked with her,” she shared.
Love Takes Time: Building Trust and Friendship
However, Alison quickly discovered that healing from loss—whether human or equine—doesn’t happen overnight. When Dream arrived at her home in Perthshire, she didn’t settle immediately. Fudge didn’t want a new friend; she wanted her old one back. And Dream, after finally finding safety and care at Belwade, felt the loss of the familiarity she’d known.
“Fudge did not want a new friend—she wanted her dear old friend back. Dream wanted to be back at Aboyne with those she knew,” Alison explained patiently. But what began as hesitation would transform into something beautiful.

Why This Story Matters
Dun Dreaming’s journey is a powerful reminder of several truths that horse lovers need to hear:
- Rescue transforms lives—both equine and human. Dream went from neglect to unconditional care.
- Patience and compassion create lasting bonds. True friendship, whether between horses or between humans and horses, takes time.
- Organizations like World Horse Welfare save lives every single day. They give forgotten horses a second chance at happiness.
- Every voice matters. One person who cared enough to make a phone call changed everything for Dream, Jelly Tot, Fudge, and Alison.
If you’re an equestrian, a horse lover, or simply someone who believes in second chances, Dun Dreaming’s story is a testament to the power of rescue, rehabilitation, and resilience. This humble Welsh pony, once left to suffer in a waterlogged field, became exactly what Fudge needed—and what Alison needed too.
