Murney, a relatively new addition to the Kingston Police mounted unit, was on routine patrol with her handler when the incident occurred on a Saturday afternoon. Without warning, a woman ran up behind the horse and struck her multiple times. The assault didn’t stop there—Murney was hit again just five minutes later and a third time around 3:30 p.m.
Fortunately, Murney demonstrated remarkable composure and training. When the woman continued her attack, the horse naturally defended herself with a swift kick of her rear left leg. The assailant quickly fled the scene.

Legal Consequences
Kingston Police took the assault on their mounted unit officer seriously. Three people were charged in connection with the incident. Two men were arrested at the scene and taken into custody, where they were formally charged with causing harm to a law enforcement animal. A woman was released at the scene pending further investigation, with police working to issue a warrant for her arrest.
Police Praise Murney’s Training
“It could have turned out into a much worse situation,” said Const. Steve Koopman. “The animal still kept its composure. Luckily the animal didn’t bolt and the officer wasn’t harmed.”
