Epic 400-Mile Unicycle Challenge Raises Funds for Injured Jockeys

Talk about riding for a cause! Three determined 21-year-old university students from the UK are about to embark on one of the most unusual—and challenging—fundraising adventures in equestrian history. Will Forsyth-Forrest, Hector Chamberlain, and Wilfrid Ward are trading their saddles for unicycles to support the Irish Injured Jockeys Fund, and they’re aiming to make serious waves while doing it.

From Penny-Farthings to One Wheel Wonder

These three Dublin-based students initially dreamed of tackling their epic journey on vintage penny-farthings—those charming (but notoriously tricky) bicycles with the enormous front wheel. But after a sobering visit to a penny-farthing museum, they realized their ambitions needed a reality check. “We visited a museum of them and realized it may be a bit over-ambitious!” explains Hector. “So we opted for unicycles, as the next best thing—we were never going to do the challenge on two wheels.”

    Training Hard for Glory

These guys didn’t let their September unicycling dreams stop them. “We learned to ride a unicycle in October, so our training has been under a year, but we finally feel confident enough to take the challenge on,” Hector shared with infectious enthusiasm.

Their training regimen has been impressive—hitting the pavement two or three times weekly until unicycling became second nature. In their longest training run, they conquered 30 miles in a single day. During the actual 400-mile journey from Ireland’s southernmost to northernmost points, they’re planning to tackle around 40 miles daily, aiming to smash the world record with an 11-day completion.

    Racing Colors and Racing Hearts

What makes this challenge even more special? These racing enthusiasts will honor their equestrian roots by sporting racing silks throughout their grueling ride. Talk about style with substance!

    Fundraising Goals on Pace

The trio has set an ambitious fundraising target of €20,000 for the Irish Injured Jockeys Fund. As of their last update, they’d already raised over €5,600—and the donations keep rolling in from an inspiring source.

“One of our sources of sponsorship is through racehorse owners, who are donating €200 so we can wear and promote their racing colors,” Hector revealed. This unique partnership beautifully bridges the racing world with their unconventional athletic challenge, creating a community of support around injured riders in need.

    Why This Matters

Beyond the impressive feat of unicycling 400 miles, what truly makes this challenge remarkable is its heart. The Irish Injured Jockeys Fund provides vital support to riders who’ve suffered career-ending injuries. By putting themselves through this wild adventure—complete with learning an entirely new skill—these three young men are turning personal challenge into meaningful change for the equestrian community.

Whether you’re a racing fan, a horse lover, or simply inspired by athletes pushing their limits for a cause, this is the kind of story that reminds us why community fundraising matters. Three unicycles. One incredible journey. Injured riders helped. That’s a race worth watching.
