Lost Horse Found: Emotional 10-Year Reunion Story

Some stories just warm your heart and remind us why we fall in love with horses in the first place. Today, we’re sharing the absolutely beautiful journey of Erin Herberger from Brighton, New York, and her beloved horse, Nemo—a tale of unexpected connection, heartbreak, and a reunion that defied the odds.

How It All Started: A Chance Meeting in 2004

Erin never planned on becoming a horse owner that day in 2004. The then-teaching student was simply accompanying a friend to a local track to look at retired racehorses. Nemo, a former racehorse with an uncertain future, caught her eye—and her heart. In that magical moment when their eyes met, something shifted. A special bond formed instantly, and Erin knew she had to bring Nemo home.

    A Difficult Decision: The Separation

For two wonderful years, Erin and Nemo were inseparable. But life had other plans. As a full-time substitute teacher juggling a demanding schedule, Erin made the heartbreaking decision to board Nemo at a local barn in 2006. She believed the college equestrian team training there would provide him with excellent care and attention, and she could still visit whenever she wanted. It seemed like the responsible choice at the time.

Within less than a year, the unthinkable happened—Nemo disappeared from the barn. All Erin learned was that someone in Virginia had purchased him. For nearly a decade, she could only wonder where her beloved horse was and how he was doing.

The Miracle: Finding Nemo After Nearly 10 Years

Then came the email that changed everything. Almost 10 years later, Erin received word that a 15-year-old bay horse with a distinctive white star marking was being sold. Could it be? When Erin saw the description and photos, she knew—it was Nemo. Her horse had been found.

With help from her loving family, Erin managed to purchase Nemo for the second time. This time, she made a promise to herself: she would never let him go again. The reunion was nothing short of magical, proving that true bonds between horse and human can withstand even a decade of separation.

A New Chapter: Training and Forever Home

Today, Nemo is living his best life at Blumont, where he’s being retrained to jump. Erin is committed to giving him the stable, loving home he deserves. After everything this beautiful bay has been through, he’s finally back where he belongs—with the woman who never stopped loving him.
