A Matriarch of the Showing World

Far more than just a pony breeder, Mrs. Jago was a devoted mentor to generations of young riders. She had a special gift for nurturing talent, welcoming scores of children into her program over the decades. Many of these riders went on to forge hugely successful equestrian careers, including Tiny Clapham, Chloe Chubb, Nicola Baldwin, Louisa Gordon Lennox, Sam Roberts, Joseph Thurston, and Shelly Dixon—all of whom proudly wore her colors in the show ring.

A Legacy Built on Champion Ponies

Mrs. Jago’s first taste of major championship success came when her 13.2hh Scrace Of Oakley, expertly produced by Pat Wood, finished reserve champion at the Royal International at Wembley. That victory set the tone for a remarkable journey through Britain’s most prestigious showing venues.

Working alongside her daughter Penny Carvosso, Mrs. Jago built an impressive partnership from their Sussex base, producing ponies that became household names in the showing community. Together, they claimed countless titles at the Royal International, Royal Windsor, and Horse of the Year Show—establishing themselves as forces to be reckoned with in the 12.2hh classes.

A Winning Streak for the Ages

One achievement stands out as particularly impressive: Mrs. Jago and Penny won three consecutive Royal International championships in the 12.2hh classes with three different ponies. Courtway Actress, Cusop Junior, and Chinook Happy Talk each took their turn in the winner’s circle, showcasing Mrs. Jago’s remarkable eye for breeding and talent development.

Her roster of champions extended far beyond those three stars. Other notable winners included Knight Errant, Rotherwood Peep O’Day, Cusop Crystal Clear, Paxford Bright, and Breezy—each one a testament to her dedication to excellence in pony breeding.

A True Lover of the Sport Until the End

What truly set Mrs. Jago apart was her unwavering passion for the sport. She remained actively involved in showing until just three weeks before her death, continuing to personally care for her beloved ponies and attend competitions. Even at 95, she refused to step back from the day-to-day responsibilities she loved—feeding her charges and watching the next generation of riders compete.

The showing world has lost not just a breeder and mentor, but a woman whose warmth, dedication, and infectious love of horses inspired everyone she touched. Ghita Jago’s legacy will live on through the countless riders she mentored and the beautiful ponies she brought into the world. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
